Cocktail shakers in the trunk - black or spatter?
Posted by: flat_six ()

Y'all with original cars can you confirm? Seems most I see are spatter painted, but so many trunks have been resprayed over the years.

Assembly manual shows them being installed, so it would seem they are black from the factory.

69's were black. One of the last things installed during final assembly.

And from the ones I have seen they were splatter painted in place. Not much to no
splatter on the backside

My very low mile '65 Corsa had splatter in the trunk, black in engine compartment as J.O. noted above.

Not sure how this holds true thru the years on LM's and different assy. plants, but this is a quote from my 1969 factory stock archives.

Canisters were among the very last items installed on the Chevrolet assembly line. Trunk splatter paint was done at Fisher Body before the body arrived at Chevrolet final assembly. All front and rear canisters were painted black before installation. Front canisters that were splatter painted, were done so, only because of trunk repainting due to damage, paint scratches, chips, etc.

I wonder if they were splatter painted before they were installed. The assembly manual clearly shows an installation step, and I can't imagine that the Chevrolet side of Willow Run shot trunk paint. But apparently they did apply undercoating.

Anyone here have contact info for Duane Wentland? He's doing the restoration on this 66 Corsa and went with black trunk shakers. I consider him to be very knowledgeable having restored many national level cars.

Of the ones who say they have splatter painted shakers, is it just the trunk side or all over?

My info...

I have a 65 Vert (LOS build) and a 66 Vert (WRN build).

I pulled the passenger side dampener and both cars have correct factory spatter paint under the brackets so no way the dampener was there when the trunk main spatter was first sprayed. Both dampeners have black paint as a base coat and both have OEM spatter that almost matches the trunk pattern (white dots are smaller and/or more "stringy").

The dampener on the 65 Monza LOS build is painted with factory spatter from nearly every angle front and back but the pattern does not exactly match the pattern of the trunk paint like is should if it were sprayed in place together. It is also sprayed far to completely to have been sprayed after it was installed. This seems to confirm that in LOS at that build time they were spatter painted separately and then installed later.

The dampener on the 66 Monza WRN build is painted with factory spatter only on the areas you would normally see once installed. Not nearly as complete coverage as the LA built 65. Again, the pattern is slightly different (smaller white dots) and does not match exactly match the factory spatter pattern in the trunk like it should if sprayed at the same time. This seems to confirm again that they were spatter painted separately and then installed later. Note: Since this dampener has spatter paint only on areas facing the observer and not the back side, I guess that it's possible it was mounted in black primer and then finished off with additional spatter paint while mounted in place.

Of course I can't confirm that any of these dampeners are original to the vehicles after so many years and multiple owners but I am certain the factory spatter painted them separate from the trunk because both vehicles clearly have spatter paint under the brackets that would not be there if the dampeners were installed and sprayed at the same time as the trunk. Looks to me like 65 and 66 dampeners were not left in plain black.

OK , you made me look, I have had this car since nearly new. I used to remove the weights for drag racing, then reinstall them. I just went down and looked. They would almost have been painted in place. The splatter is very weak/light behind the mounting brackets and good where ever they could get a good shot at it.

Was it built at Willow Run? Does the spatter on the dampeners appear to have been sprayed at a different angle or is it slightly different pattern than the trunk spatter? That would reveal a secondary OEM spatter coat was done after the install which is how I think mine were done.

Dave, WRN yes. The pattern on the back is different and weak. The front seems to match the rest of the trunk, its hard tell, because there are a lot of angles of painting involved to cover all all the surfaces involved. I would guess they were final coated in place, but different painters, did it differently as long as it was covered enough that they didn't get their butt chewed.
