When you want to get real ambitious, build a stand like this one. Not sure who built it originally, but it is the greatest thing for static running an engine. Have my old engine on it right now, testing the rebuilt parts, starter, alternator, distributor and next, carburetors. Once I have them all set up, I'll be putting the new engine on with all the parts and start it up.
