I know, I know, they’re as rare as hen’s teeth but after finding two stock forged TRW 145 pistons, I’d be a fool not to check the forum to see if I could find four more. Well, does anyone have any that they are willing to part with?

You might have checked the earlier threads on this topic before buying those. The seller advised me that he could not locate others. Those are correct 61-63 forged pistons made by TRW. Since you have a sample for scanning, you probably can have more made pretty readily. I decided to go with stock pistons when I could not find any 2156 pistons anywhere.

yes, you might have to wait a long time to find some other pistons to make a set.

I'm wondering if it might be cheaper to find some longer rods that might work with some LM 164 cubic inch forged pistons? Or just get a long stroke crank and make it work?

I went through this same conundrum a few years ago... I tried to find a pair of either early forged pistons or a pair of early "Hitech" pistons which are supposed to be as strong as forged. After a long search, I gave up and bought a pair of Clarks "Premium Grade" cast pistons. I would have much preferred to not do that, but I have had those pistons up to 22 psi, numerous times now and have approximately 12000 miles on this goofy set of 4 "Hitech" pistons and a pair of "Premium Grade" pistons with zero problems. Moly rings with a good ring gap, good safe timing and fuel air ratio for the load with the idea of staying well away from detonation and not going much past 20psi is probably more important than the piston construction.

Right... I don’t expect to ever find all six, but I figured I should try as I continue to solve other problems here and there. Who knows, I might get lucky or someone on this forum may find some in a box that they’ve had in their garage for 20+ years.

A little while ago, a fellow in Australia contacted me to say that a company in his country called Precision International makes pistons that are very similar to that of the EM Corvair. From him:

As a matter of interest it looks like the Holden 161 CI engine in Australia had a very similar piston to the Corvair EM.

Head type – Flat Top / Bore Size – 3.375” / Size - +060” / Compression height - 1.798" / Pin Diameter - 0.866"

The 179CI engine is:

Head type – Flat Top / Bore Size – 3.5625” / Size - STD / Compression height – 1.800” / Pin Diameter – 0.8661" (press fit) / 3 ring piston (2mm * 2mm * 3/16”)

The 186 CI engine is:

Head type – Flat Top / Bore Size – 3 5/8” / Size – 020 / Compression height – 1.784” / Compression Ratio – 8.5:1 / Pin Diameter – 0.8661" (press fit) / 3 ring piston (2mm*2mm*3/16”)

They are still made aftermarket by JP Pistons in Australia and a set of 6 is $798 AUD which is about $550 USD.

If forged is what you want, it can be done, you just have to be willing to pay. I am confident that a place like Venolia could make them to order.

edit: I just googled Venolia and it looks like they are no longer in business. I'm glad I said "a place like" Venolia!
