What else can happen?
Posted by: Misfire ()
Date: September 12, 2020 06:37AM

So, While on the 2nd test driving the 64 spyder put back together again, One of the mono-leaf spring bolts on rear control arm let go and ripped a hole in diffy' Got another diff.
Question? Can i run stronger coil springs and do away with the mono leaf?

Wow! I've had several of those end of spring bolts fail in 40 years, but never had a differential case failure from it.

Most memorable was in a 64 4 door, with 5 people in a carpool on I-95. Left a shower of sparks and a groove in the road to the service station, where I had him put it on the lift and remove the transverse leaf spring. The end of the leaf had worn off/turned blue/curled up past the end bolt hole.Car sat rrrreeeaallllyyyyy low for the remainder trip to work and back home 30 miles!

The dragging end probably caught something on the road and was pulled backward and the center hanger broke the bottom casting of the diff.

Edit to say LOTS MORE can happen. ggg

Are you asking if they all had the leaf and coils? No. That was '64 only.

It will bring back the "Wheel tuck" in hard cornering that the '64 setup eliminated!

That'd almost be like having one oil filter failure, and saying that's it, no more oil filters for me I'm just going to put on a block off plate.
The 64 rear suspension is a far superior, proven product that is near bulletproof. You just had 56 year old bolts wearing on 56 year old washers.

Fix the 64 rear suspension correctly. 64 diff isn't particularly rare and labor to r&r powertrain is the same. The transverse spring hardware is easily available. If you give your location someone near you might have one.

It would seem that all of the '60 thru '63 cars are death traps without that leaf spring. The way he describes driving the car he probably won't notice a difference.

Quite likely, I never had an issue with my '61, and I drove it hard.
BUT, it makes no sense to go BACKWARDS with suspension engineering.
I would hate to be the disappointed next owner of that car, who is expecting to acquire a superior, factory equipped '64.
