Wireless Portable Oil Temp Gauge

Ran into this little gadget last weekend for under $20 at Walmart. Not sure if anyone else has tried these. I'm sure they are on Amazon too.

If you want a simple way to measure your oil temperature this device works pretty well and requires no permanent changes or wiring taps to the vehicle and is portable of course. I carefully bent the probe straight so it would slide down the dipstick tube and that is all the prep required. I like that it is wireless but does NOT need a smartphone or an app downloaded.

The unit came with batteries and had no trouble communicating with the remote unit even in the environment of my noisy old ignition system. The transmitter has an internal magnet so I slide the probe down the dipstick tube, stuck the transmitter on top of the air cleaner lid, tossed the receiver on the passenger seat and headed for the freeway.

I semi-randomly set the temp to sound the alarm at 239F figuring that would be high enough to not go off while I was driving. You can set the temp as you like.

Second photo shows my engine oil temp after 11 miles on the freeway when it was 111F outside. The device updates the temperature about every 5 seconds and worked without a hitch. My infrared temp guns confirmed the same oil temps within a few degrees. Pretty simple way to learn your oil temps while you are driving, especially if you aren't interested in doing a permanent install.

There are plenty of these BBQ temperature probe units out there but most are more money and require a smartphone. I'm quite please with this one for $20 off the local store shelf and it can easily be passed around for friends to use.

Looks good, but makes the steaks taste funny, the next time you use it.

So I'm guessing the probe plugs into the base unit? What kind of batteries does it use?

Yes. Probe has a plug and is removable from the base transmitter. The transmitter and receiver use two AAA each. You can buy two additional probes for $8 if you want to leave a probe permanently installed someplace and then just plug in the base as needed.

Considering where you are locating the probe, in the back end of a Corvair, I guess it could be a rectal thermometer.
