Al, look at his picture more closely. You can still see the crank pulley. He did not remove the cover.

He said he did in last post with a photo. But it does show a crank pulley. I wonder what rear cover he pulled?

So he needs to know that he has to support engine to pull rear engine mount and rear cover off the engine block. Nothing else will do to get at the pushrod to cut it in two and get both pieces out of the engine.

From the looks of the inside of that engine I would,
1. Reinstall oil filter/gen. adapter.
2. Put spring back on fuel pump push rod.
3. Remove fittings and reinstall old leaking pump.
4. Reverse fuel lines on the carbs. and connect electric pump at front of engine.

Pump rod will have spring to push against so it will be quiet. Set up will last the rest of that engines life.

It will be a good opportunity to check the oil pump and clean up that mess in at least that part of the engine. Replace the rear seal while you are in there.

Looks like that engine has seen cheap oil and not enough oil changes. That may be contributing to the rod not wanting to come up. As a last resort (before removing the rear cover) I would grab it (the rod) with vise grips and try pulling HARD. Use penetrating oil, spray-pull-push back- repeat.

I'm thinking that too. Maybe some brake clean will creep down the rod and remove the grime that might potentially be keeping it from coming out? I looked at my rod and the end is chamfered. It would take a lot of wear to even get to the point of mushrooming.

Also, there are two holes through the side of the rod. Perhaps you could fish some wire through and that would be assistive in pulling on the rod.

Kind of a meatball solution, but as posted, grab what's left sticking out with a pair of vice grips and pull up as hard as you can while twisting. Now it might be really stuck. So just cut it off again. Reinstall the oil filter adapter, fuel pump plug, go about your business. If that push rod isn't varnished and it's truly mushroomed, those cam lobes and lifters are not long for this world anyhow.

Spray carburetor cleaner works a lot better than brake cleaner on sludge.
