Take the set screw all the way out and pull straight up.

I have seen a few of these push rods mushroom on the end, making removal a bit challenging.

He was asking about the fuel pump rod, not the fuel pump.

Yes, the rod and spring should pull straight out unless there is a burr or some mushrooming on the bottom end that rides on the eccentric lobe.

I usually grab the spring with a pick and they easily pull up. Seems like a well lubed part due to location. If mushroomed at the bottom it will still easily slide up 90% of the way.

As long as it does not push the bottom of the new block off plug, you would be okay. Many of those plugs have a solid center core and that may cause interference. You could possibly drill out the plug core from the bottom to give you clearance.

I'm betting it mushroomed since there are no other screws besides the pump retaining bolt. I forgot and left one in once, but was reminded as soon as I started the car as the push rod beat against the block-off plug.

I don't like the idea of anything loose and moving in my engine. Does it move at all up and down when you grab it with small pliers? If you remove the oil filter adapter plate you have much more room to get it.

I agree with Tim not only constantly bouncing around but making a noise while it bounces. I use needle nose vise grips if tough to pull upwards, Use the center hole and one side to grab the end.

Unfortunately removing a mushroomed fuel pump pushrod almost always requires removing the rear engine cover for access. I have seen a few like this and the only way to remove the pushrod was to cut the mushroomed end off, in order to extract the pushrod. I used a cut off wheel in a Dremel Tool.

Cut off below the flagged area and push it through. If it doesn't work, I have a rear cover I will sell you.

The bottom has mushroomed. Cutting it off will leave a piece of metal banging around in there. If you can't force it out, you will have to remove the rear housing to get it out by cutting or grinding.

David, he said he removed the cover. Cutting it below the flange will allow it to be pushed back towards center of cover and out. Provided he makes sure cut doesn't leave a blurred edge to jam it in the cover.

Sorry, the pic looks like it is just the alt/gen adapter that was removed.
