Door latch cam jammed
Posted by: Mountainbrown ()

Hello,
My door latch cam is jammed after someone pushed the door handle into the lock position with the door open and then tried to shut the door. I have not been able to get it to rotate and the door won't shut now. Does anyone know the best way for me to proceed? 1964 Corvair Monza

That shouldn't cause the problem. It may just need some lube or a spring broke. Take the panel off and WD40 it.

I've done that and it is still jammed solid. I'm hesitant to take the mechanism off the door since I've never done that before.

Does anyone know of a video on taking apart the door/latch mechanism?

You should be able to rotate the gear while holding the door latch in the open position. If it is jammed I would thing some kind of pry bar would get the job done.
The latch is pretty easy to get out of the door but none of the springs are available. Clark's sells the one to return the inner door handle.
The clip holding the rod from the inner door handle to the latch works in an odd way IIRC you have to rotate the latch 90 degrees to release it. Don't force it.
I had to replace a spring in my Lakewood latch recently because the door wouldn't stay shut but my gear didn't jam.

Yeah I tried the pry bar as well. I can't figure out why it is so jammed up. So if I take out the latch am I going to jeopardize the springs?

No. The springs are all in the latch. Mine failed due to rust.

Make sure the door is unlocked then hold the button/ pull the handel. Then tap with a blunt object and small hammer. 2 people are required or great skill

If you have to pull it apart, it is not hard. I just did mine to clean and lube the mechanisms.

-Take off panel (handles, arm rests, etc)
-Take off paper or plastic
-Reach up and pull out the tab that holds the lock cylinder (good time to rinse in thinner and add graphite or moly (not WD-40). The little pin on the cylinder goes into the mechanism, so this comes out first and goes back last.
-Take out screws from exterior of door latch
-Take out three screws for the handle mechanism

It will basically fall apart at this point, as the slide is a straight piece that goes into the rail in one position, and once turned, slides out.

Clean all the stuff, push and pull, twist the teeth, etc. Lubricate and assemble. Don't forget to put the cylinder pin inside the loop on the mechanism.

Could this be related in any way to the problem that corvairs' sometimes have where the door is jammed shut after trying to open it? In that case, I know what you're supposed to do is to put a covering like plywood against the inside of the door, Have someone on the outside holding in the latch, and then kick the sucker like crazy until it comes free. This happens because there's a small piece of plastic inside the latch that breaks, but that you don't need. Was wondering if the same sort of thing happened to him, but with the door open?

Eric, I could be wrong, but I believe that is an LM problem, and he has an EM.
The latches are different if my old memory is correct.

No LM's fail so badly that you can't get out of the car.

They didn't begin to fail until they were really OLD & worn, WAAAAAY after GM quit giving a flipping hoot about them.
