1964 Steering Boxes
Posted by: Curtis ()

Hey guys.

My buddy needs to replace his steering box. I seem to have one in my stash. What are some signs that a box is "bad" if being tested out of the car?

Also, are there part numbers for a 64 box? Clarks doesn't seem to list a new replacement for 64.

TIA!

If it is out of the car, best to disassemble it and give it a good cleaning and rebuild if necessary.

There are no new "64" boxes. Any other year Corvair box can be swapped in with some work. The only "New" boxes from Clarks are 60-63 style, but with a cast iron case. Again, with the proper U-joint, they can safely be installed replacing a 64 or one-piece 65 column.

Curtis ,as Junkman said disassemble, clean and inspect. Usual problems are corrosion/rusting on the nut and pitman shaft. If you need parts I have excellent used and new parts. Ken Arnold

Prior to taking apart you can look at the threads sticking out of the adjuster nut. If no threads then it is at least needs bushings. The shaft should turn smoothly. You should be able to feel bad bearings. As everyone else said the best way is to take it apart and that is also the only way to check the teeth for rust pitting which seems to be the most common problem.

Joel... if the screw is all the way down, that means that the balls are shot, and most likely, the rest of the internal parts are most likely toast. Never judge a book by its cover. .

I said "at least".
I've taken them apart that had the adjustment used up that only needed bushings. I did replace the bearings also.
I agree that if the balls have failed then the other parts are often bad also.
Also if the shaft turns smoothly the bearings have a chance of being good.

On my other 64 Monza I put a 67-69 box in it. I cut the steering shaft off the old box and welded a universal joint on the shaft. worked great.

Thank you all for the tips. I will have him order C10881 and try to make one good one out of two.
