What' that engine noise?
Posted by: spesce ()
Date: July 28, 2020 12:27PM

Okay, another new noise coming from this "new to me" engine. I finally get it running smoothly and then a new noise starts......

It sound like a bearing noise or timing chain noise. Definitely a spinning noise. I removed the belt and started the engine and the noise stayed the same. so I say it is not the fan, idler pulley or alternator. No different whether it is under load or at idle. I have great oil pressure.

I will take any ideas......mechanical oil pump? timing chain? what's the best way to isolate as it has cherrybomb exhaust with megaphones.....

Please throw out ideas. With the limited file size for upload I cannot take a video and post. I might need to add to youtube for you all to hear.

Corvairs have no chains timing or otherwise so that isn't it.
The most common internal noises from Corvairs are lifters but your description has me stumped. The oil pan has a rectangular area in the front next to the drain plug that covers the timing gear. Is that area dented and rubbing the gear?

Thanks for the quick response. I did change the oil pan gasket and while dinged a little, there was no signs of rubbing on the inside.

I have videos but too large to send a little over 1 Mb.

The clatter was before and after I replaced the oil pan gasket. I just checked and oil level was 1/2 between full and empty. I did top off and no change in noise. sad smiley

Get a mechanic's stethoscope from most auto parts stores, about $10.
This will allow one to pin point the noise location much easier.

How does clutch and gearbox feel if you drive down driveway/street gently?

This is a VW drivetrain. Flipped gears. The noise does not seem to have any affect from driving or idle. As you can hear in the Clatter 4 video, it sounds louder in the front of the engine. Flywheel? Throwout bearing? it is a strange noise.

I am aware it is swing axle VW. The reason I asked how clutch worked and driving is exactly what you said, noise from front of engine in bellhsng/adapter area.

I am wondering what the noise would be from in there. I have a new clutch and placed new bolts on the flywheel when I installed. I can have the engine out in about 30 minutes, but I am a lazy sob. I just put the engine in. I might need to buckle down and just do it if there are no better suggestions.

I can't really tell anything from the video. Exhaust covers it up too much for me.

I agree Joel I always have a tough time trying to isolate a noise through a microphone. Since the OP has removed belt and noise continues it makes sense to look at the other end of the engine. Well to me anyway ggg

EDIT to ask about new flywheel bolts. You used the short bolts that would be for PG flex plate correct?

Disregard reference to flex plate bolts please but depending upon which flywheel you are using there are special bolts for flywheel to crank hub.

It sure sounds like an early riveted flywheel with worn out rivets to me. They would clatter like that. Other than that, if you used the wrong flywheel bolts, don't try to guess at this. The flywheel could come loose & do some major damage.
Good luck. Take a deep breath, count to 10 & spend the 30 minutes to take the engine out. Oh, have a beer too. Doug Ward
