1969 Hidden VIN
Posted by: MonzaDave ()

A question was asked on the 69 Corvair Facebook page whether 69 Corvairs had a hidden VIN. It seemed logic that they would, but who knows. I currently have the front suspension off my '69, so I decided to get a definitive answer. The answer is "Yes". Mine is on the right frame rail, as usual (see picture). The stamped number is 9W702278. The full VIN is 105379W702278. The car was built in the Corvair Room on 11/22 or 23/68 and was the 83rd car built in the Corvair Room.

Look at the bottom of the frame rail as I have seen them stamp at both place most of the time.

Maybe when I put the front suspension back in (it will be awhile). Otherwise I'll leave that exercise to the "interested student". smiling smiley

Quite frankly, I half expected the hidden VIN not match the dash VIN given all the assembly errors I found on the car (I ordered it new). But they matched!

What you expected was a dyslexic stamper?

Actually, very possibly. You should see how the outer fender is attached to the inner fender -- fitted with a BFH -- seriously. I documented about 100 defects ranging from minor to major. The zone manager told me later (after my attorney sent him a breech of warranty notice) that he didn't believe that Chevy would let a car that bad leave the factory. He believed me after he inspected the car. It was supposed to be a replacement for my wife's '65 Corvair, but after about a month she said she'd never drive the POS again.

It kind of bothers me to think a car leaving the factory with different vins. Has this ever been seen or are you just
commenting on the sloppiness of the build Dave?

Just a frustrated comment on general sloppiness. I'm sure they had a system of cross-checks for the VIN. At least mine agreed -- and the engine, too.

On the '66 coupe that I made my trailer out of it had a 5 where the 6 should be for the year. All of the rest of the digits matched with the vin tag so I don't think someone swapped for one exactly a year off.

I have the frame sections from about 6 or 7 cars that I have parted out and I think that they all were double stamped.

They would be souvenirs from cars that use to be. And no I don't sell them to change the identity of a car.
