If you are only street driving you don't need one.

I have an NOS carrier housing, $250 plus shipping.

Posi unit with associated and needed side adjuster ?
Or the complete diff assembly ?
What year?
Big difference in value, 63 vs 64.
Ratio ?
Your location ??

The 64 Diff case has a Boss and machined surface on the bottom for the transverse leaf spring

Which makes it more valuable because it is one year only.
Just having the carrier will not work, as the posi side bearing adjuster is needed and is thinner in cross section.

Oh so long ago when I had my Corvair powered buggy (So Cal deserts from Anza Borrego through the Owens Valley) my main differential concerns were low gear ratio and 4-spider. I probably blew-up three or four 2-spider diffs before converting. Steering brakes were a must with my venues - especially hill climbs - and posi and steering brakes aren't compatible AFIK.

The early posi covers are too thin and very prone to breaking. And, in your application it’s almost a guarantee it will end up in two or more pieces like the typical one shown in the picture below. And as Craig stated, if you have steering brakes on your buggy then you really don’t want to run a posi diff. Either way though, whether you go with an open or posi diff in this application you will want to add the 4-spider set up.

If you are set on running a posi, then I would recommend that you install a modified late 9 bolt diff with the thicker stronger cover along with the 4-spider modification as shown in the second set of pictures.

This off-road stuff is a lot of fun but it certainly does take a toll on the transaxles and your wallet. As many here on this forum can attest to, if you don’t do it now, you’ll end up getting there sooner or later after a lot of extra work and money.

You can build a 4 spider setup with or without posi.

as much as i like the idea of the posi- i might have a problem with going around corners with this light weight dune buggy. a 4 spider might be my best bet- let me know what you can help me with. thanks- Darrell

If you want I can modify an early carrier for a 4 spider set up. I can also modify the early posi housing so it is LESS prone to breakage. I also have the needed side adjuster and Made in the USA posi plates.
