Insulation behind the rear seat - convertible
Posted by: mashad11 ()

So I am cleaning up the convertible top and the rear seat.

There is old insulation behind the rear seat that is all almost decomposed. I am just going to remove it all.

What is the right material to replace it with, or does it even need to be replaced with anything. I assume removing it might increase the noise in the car, but I don't care about the noise. Does it serve any other purpose?

Yes it makes quite a difference! I have driven more then a few convertibles without the insulation before I replaced it. Clarks sells the factory correct jute type insulation and its not bad to install. That said any number of newer type sound deadeners can be installed - your choice.

Dynamat I used. I used a Camaro set up. Cant remember which packages, but I cover the package shelf, the rear wall and under seat areas.

After I cleaned and dried the swamp out of my new-to-me convertible, I simply laid some R-13 fiberglass batting under the seat.
Hey, I was 16 and it was sitting there just calling out to be used. But I'm here to tell you, it made a VERY noticeable difference.
So I left it.

After all... It's only temporary, unless it works!

Did a search and decided to jump on this rather than start a new thread:

Does anyone have pics for how this insulation gets installed? I'm restoring my first convertible (66) and I haven't a clue how this goes in.

I have Clarks PN C3427. Ordered qty of 1, came with TWO identical pads. Rectangular with little tabs at the lower corners.

Do these get stacked? Or does one go on the shelf under the well and the other behind the seat?

Thanks!

Mike

I guess I'll have to get the Fisher books out and look.

The three LM convertibles I've looked had NO insulation in the well area, just the fabric cover. Two of the three had power tops with the motor in the well area under the fabric.

There was originally a compacted cardboard like material I believe. Check Clark's catalog.

Clark's sent this. No instructions. I have no idea how this is installed.

Any help is appreciated.

: Shrug :

I use indoor outdoor carpet adhesive to put it down. Glued one down then the other on that. Not saying I did it right but it works. Doest matter that much either once the well is installed.

That's helpful - thanks! I can see by the photos and the sheet metal contours that these pads were meant for that shelf.

Cheers, Mike
