Billet Cartridge Fan Bearing Hub
Posted by: jazzworkerbee ()
Date: July 23, 2020 05:16PM

I purchased a NOS Billet Cartridge Fan Bearing Hub from American Pi and have hit a bit of a snag. I got the original bearing off and went to install the new one and noticed a distinct difference in the shaft diameters. Please see the attached pic. The original is roughly .63 and the new one is about .75. I know that the billet one is specifically made for LM cars, which leads me to believe that my engine cover isn't original to my car. Can anyone offer any enlightenment on this?

My suspicion is confirmed. I have an EM top cover, so does that mean my car has a 64 fan? Regardless, I can have the top cover opened up to accommodate the new bearing without making things worse, right?

Why not just get the proper Top-Cover?

Don't know. Is it a magnesium fan with small bearing and large bolts? 65-69 had a mag fan of course but with big bearings and small bolts.

If you get a 65-69 top cover you will also need a fan, fan pulley and the 4 bolts. The good news (maybe) is the 64
stuff is probably more rare (1 year stuff vs. 5 years of production).

Thanks for chiming in everyone! More confused than ever... As the attached pictures show, the old bearing housing sits loosely inside the fan and the new one is very snug. Also, the old pulley has 1/4 inch bolt holes. The holes are quite smaller on the new, aluminum pulley, and they are the same size as the holes on the new bearing housing. Does that mean that an EM top and bearing was used with a LM fan and pulley? If so, then does that also mean that someone taped the old bearing housing to accommodate the 1/4" bolts?

Not exactly sure of what to do next. Ray Sedman has offered to turn the new spindle down to fit the top, but it may be a moot point if the holes in the fan are a different size than everything else. If they aren't centered, I fear the engine might act like a washing machine with too many towels on one side during the spin cycle. Could that be solved with an inserted washer or bushing? I have access to a lathe and I'm confident in my basic skills to do that with aluminum or stainless.

I reached my limit with pics, so I'll add a few more after this message..

More pics for reference. The odd one is the number on the underside of the top cover, in case someone finds that useful. The pulleys are the same size, but the bolt holes are different sizes. Could that mean that the fellow who sold me the pulley on ebay sent an EM instead of a LM?

Trying to relieve your confusion.
As stated..
You have or had a 64 top cover, fan, belt pulley, bearing and hub.
What you got from Ray is a 65-69 bearing and fan hub. The Mag fan was started in 1964, but it was retooled for 1965 -9 with the larger bearing and top cover.

Your 1960 - 1994 top cover cannot be bored out for the later bearing. There is not enough material to do that.
The simplest solution is to get the proper bearing and hub that are the same as what you are replacing.
To keep the new hub and bearing you will need a 1965 or later engine top cover, 65-69 fan and 65-69 belt pulley.

After 60 years of fiddling, our Corvairs can have about any mixed batch of parts thrown in there.

Since you have a 65 Vair. Get the right cover and fan. That way there is no confusion in the future. Don't get modified parts to make it work. Modifying the new bearing shaft still means a new fan and bolts. You already have the cover off for the bearing change, put the LM cover on.

This is all assuming you have an engine with a code with R at the end.

If you have a 1964 Y code engine, get the right bearing, if you want that configuration.

I am guessing his engine code is RL for his turbocharged Corsa. And I am in total agreement to put the 65 correct stuff back on it.

YR is either 62-3 turbo w/145ci engine OR 1964 turbo w/164ci engine

65/66 turbo case halves are all RL

EDIT to remind you that as Corventure Dave stated above anything and everything can be changed/swapped to the engines and everything else on these cars 50-60 years

I would go with the 65 set up. But that is my preference. Someone threw a 64 turbo engine in that 65. If you ever want a LM turbo engine, let me know. I have one in my shed stored and wrapped. Never going to use it. May convert to a 110 when and if needed,

Thanks for all of the advice and insight. I’m pretty frustrated right now and don’t quite know what I’m going to do next. I’m pretty sure the fellow who sold the car to me knew that it wasn’t the right engine and kept that to himself. What’s worse is I can’t hold him accountable for it because I purchased the car nearly two years ago and it was in storage until April.

Really odd that the block was swapped out and all of the LM intake, ignition and exhaust components were re-installed.

If the case halves are 1964 (164ci) and the cam and turbo/carb are F flow parts and distributor is correct then you still have 180hp turbo engine. Just not number matching. If engine was running well nothing really wrong. We have been telling you that parts get swapped around

Get the head number off the right head and post it. It is located on aft end of head. You will then have a better idea of the basic engine. If it is a 64 turbo, it is just the same as a 65 but with a different code, if I am right.
