NAPA 1038 Oil Filter - Problems?
Posted by: Paulsgt ()
Date: July 22, 2020 07:31PM

The NAPA 1038 "Gold" has been my go-to oil filter for quite some time. I just put one on that leaks so I got another one that has the wrong size hole in the center for the bolt!?!?!?!?

Anyone else had recent experience with this filter?

Thanks!

Enjoy the Corvair!

For several years I bought a case in the Spring during their sale. Two years ago the price didn't warrant it so I quit. They were always good Wix filters in a NAPA
disguise so I'm sorry to hear they may have gone downhill. I always wanted there to be more than one source for Corvair oil filters. Along those same lines I don't support adapters.

Wix was purchased by Mann Filter, who also owns Purolator filter. The consolidation of the filter manufacturers has continued for the past 40 years, to the point that there are very few manufacturers left.

About five years ago I think that the NAPA Brand filters changed suppliers and part numbers.
They used to be made by WIX but no longer are, if my memory serves me correctly.
I bought a case of each different number for my Corvair, Prowler, and Focus back then which is why this sticks in my mind.
There is a good chance I am wrong, but that is what my memory is telling me.

With the defects with Purolator, it's sad to hear Wix was sold to the parent Co. of Purolator.tongue sticking out smiley

I looked up a filter on Napa's site this week and they are still using the Wix part numbers for their filters with a 5 tacked on the front. Not that that means anything.

I go through many Wix/Napa filters. I just had a new one that leaked- nothing I could do would make it seal. I swapped to another Wix/Napa, and the problem went away.

I sent the leaky one back to NAPA. I think the gasket was cut unevenly but cannot confirm that. I have a new one on there now. I'll try it later and see if the new one works.

Enjoy the Corvair!

We use Napa at work for parts. Not uncommon at all for filters to not seal. Doen't happen often, it does happen.

Stock is slowly being rotated thru from WIX to Mann. Once the old ones are gone, new ones start showing up.

Have you seen any new Mann Corvair filters?

No. I don't think the sales of the filters is fast enough for old stock to deplete.

And therein lies the rub.
If sales of Corvair filters is that slow, Mann will most likely Discontinue When Gone, rather than produce an unprofitable filter.

Worse than that. Just went to the Mann Filter website and chose "car" then Chevrolet, then "year", wait, nothing before 2006??????????

Wix has always had a bolt gasket that had an inside diameter that was a little too big.

I spoke with an engineer, at Wix, about it years ago..

If I really thought they do something - I would have sent a couple bolts for them to use to get it right.

We had even spoke about doing that.
But I did not feel that it would happen due to cost and how many they sell.

Yeah my new Wix filter thru O'reillys has a slow leak down the sides. Afraid to over tighten the bolt with that fine thread. May have to take it back to O'reillys for a another one. angry smiley Mike

Update: The latest one I installed seems to be leak free.

I think they have raised the prices on the "WIX" filters as well. I had to pay $20 for the batch I just bought.

Enjoy the Corvair!
