Also, can anyone point to a source for the small carbon seal ring?

So, I have that inner oil seal apart and as far as I can tell, it requires an 016 Viton o-ring. Is that correct? There wasn't one in the housing, so I have no point of reference. However, I still cant find a reliable source on how to reassemble it. Can someone give me the order?

Thanks,

Can anyone give me the size or number of the outer o-ring on the carbon seal? I'm thinking of upgrading from Viton to Kalrez for my rebuild because it can stand much higher temperatures, but I need to know which size to order.

Great thread.

Does anyone know if the original GM (TRW) compressor carbon seal and the Clark's replacement use the same o-ring?

I have an NOS kit and definitely will want to replace that o-ring before using the "new" carbon seal.

Just to be sure, those measurements are for the large, outer o-ring?

Yup, thank you! Not sure I’ll be able to find the 2-040 size and man are they expensive! Granted, I’ve only taken two of these turbos apart, but both sets of Vitons were absolute toast and allowed oil to pass through to the cold side. I think that the 200 degree temperature difference between Viton and Kalrez should make a major difference toward longevity of the seal and efficiency of the turbo.

Look at the pic close, it seems to be square rather than "O". The one you have may not have be viton, the originals were neoprene , hard as a rock. This one is old, don't remember if its new or used, still soft and pliable. If I had to guess, I would say silicone, judging by the color. What color are your toast ones? $4 bucks from for viton.

Also, if your turbine housing is rusty and you clean it up, the inner heat shield may drag on the turbine wheel or lock it up completely, Clarks has SS shims to correct this.

My originals were all black, but I’m guessing they are too far gone to show their original color. One basically desegregated as soon as I removed the carbon seal.

Those were neoprene, you should be fine with Clarks viton. I had those in for 15+ years no problem

How much is that Kalrez O-ring setting you back? I have several hundred dollars worth of o-ring samples in my desk drawer at work - its expensive stuff.

The viton o-rings will be fine. I have NEVER had one harden! I have a bag of select used Viton o-rings that I will reuse if I need to replace just one. The turbo cold side does not run any hotter than the engine and probably cooler.

Black and crispy? Probably not Viton.

Ok, thanks. Can anyone tell me what size studs to use on both the hot and cold sides? I am upgrading to a Weber dcoe and EM hot side if that helps. My cold side has studs of uneven length because of the downdraft setup that’s on there now and the hot side has nothing, so I’ll have to tap them after it gets cleaned.
