Turbo Assembly
Posted by: jazzworkerbee ()
Date: June 10, 2020 07:03PM

Hello all,

I checked and couldn't find a thread that addresses my issue, but I'm sure that someone has tackled this before. That being, I am rebuilding my LM turbo and adding an EM hot side. I have all of the parts and gaskets except the sacrificial nylon seal that holds everything in place while it's being assembled. Is there a work around or a substitute?

Thank s for your help,

The shop manual tells you to use a shop tag wire to keep it compressed. I do NOT advise doing that. Yes I have tried it. If it slips off to soon you will wreck something thats more costly than the than the seal that melts. My 2 cents

Thanks for the advice! I Think I can get one from Sedman. He's going to see if he has one.

Yeah, he’s been going through some stuff. He’s a good guy and I’m willing to wait.

Clark's is out of them currently, same with OPGI. I'm after one as well.

Ray asked me to try the wire technique that is discussed in the shop manual first and that’s what I’m going to do. I have to wait a couple of weeks or so for space in my buddy’s parts washer before I can try.

The wire technique will work, but you must be careful, its very easy for it to slide off before the ring is full seated in the housing. Maybe Steve Goodman has some insight, I'm sure he's seen a lot more than most plus that sleeve was not available way back when. Also, there may be another source.

Apologies Steve, I have not learned what or where those references are. I have downloaded the manuals from the corvantics website, but I don't think I get it. Big crayons please..

Steve sez: no apology needed, I was just showing where GM included the tool with their seal if you used the correct part number. This is from the P&A 30 parts book used by GM counter persons before computers stored the numbers.

NOTE this was a long time ago. ggg

Thank you. I often had to use "big crayons" for my soldiers. I found it's a fun way of saying, we never stop learning. I appreciate the lesson.

I have used the tag wire many times! It does work but you cannot leave long tails on the wire. You need to wrap the wire around and then safety wire twist it so it stays. You then need to cut the tail so it is only about 4 wraps and then bend the tail so it is next to the shaft.

Is it easy? NO. Can it be done? Yes.

Should I also replace the inner o-ring (where the shaft passes through) on the carbon seal ring? I have the outer o-ring on the way and was wondering if I should look for the inner.

Thanks,

If you take the carbon seal apart you need to be very careful. The carbon is not really super hard and you can break it.

It takes the same o-ring as the lower vent tube to top cover. Use only Viton.

If you hadn't stumbled on it yet, Google rayjay turbo rebuild, by Nicholas Schumaker. It is a great resource.
