Ring and pinon contact pattern

Hey guys

So the car has finally stumped me and I'm reaching out for some help.

I purchased 66 transaxle 4 speed out of junk yard. I'm currently rebuilding the diff. I put new gasket and orings in and replaced the bearings because they were crunchy.

I wanted to check the contact pattern because the thickness of the new bearings was about .010" bigger then the original ones. Problem is the contact pattern I getting doesn't really match any of the ones shown i n the manual.

I have it at .007" of backlash and 10 inchpounds on the turning of the pinion. Coast side appears fairly good but drive side appears to be contacting primarily on the upper inside edge and a little but on the outside edge (see pics). Increased and decreased the backlash with little to no affect.

So I'm thinking it is shim thickness issue. But I don't know whether I need to add or remove shims and how much.

Any advice you guys can give me would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Loads, The pattern's not clear but it looks like you need a thinner pinion shim--probably by .008-.010 . Don't worry about the backlash if it falls a little outside the specs. The contact pattern is more important to quiet operation

Remember the error in the 1965 book:
The patterns are correct but the
“drive teeth” and the “coast teeth”
are interchanged

There are some online sites with good photos, like this one:

Ring Gear Patterns

Apologies if that does not link well, have not spent much time on this forum.
