RUSTED SWAY BAR: WILL IT BREAK???
Posted by: alexbert ()

Dear All,

lately I heard loud noise on the anti sway bar.
I lowered it and I found it quite rusted under the central rubber bushings.
I post here some picture.
No problem under the external rubber bushings.
I will now paint with some antirust paint just to protect a bit.
Is this something happens often?

Do you think it can break in the future?
It would be a problem to import such a bar to Italy...confused smiley
Thank you for every copntribution.

Alex from Italy

No, but change those rubber bushings, if they are hard. Bushings should be a pliable rubber.

Never heard of one breaking. Clean it up... paint it, new bushings and grease them... last for another 60 years!

I haven't seen a broken Corvair sway bar. I wouldn't worry about it. Mine is pitted similar to that and I haven't had an issue with it. Cleaned it and painted it with epoxy paint, new rubber outer bushings and nylon inners (a bit firmer, rubber is fine).

Order new bushings, then take your bar to a shop in Italy and have them bend you a new one to replace it. If they can build Ferraris, they can bend a steel bar.

I had never seen a bar fail so when my son's father-in-law was told that his anti sway bar needed to be replaced on his 2010 Impala I thought the dealer was trying to scam him. Then I googled it and found out that broken bars are a typical problem with late model sway bars. Why? The bars are a hollow tube. Probably to reduce weight. This would fall into the category that they don't make them like they used to. Jim

Yup, Ive replaced quite a few. The hollow tube is crimped on the end, a hole drilled for the end link. After a few years of flexing, they crack and eventually break at the end link.

The torsional stiffness of the bar is really a function of its diameter, not whether its solid or hollow, so while it may not break, since it is solid, it will be in effect softer... especially at that point of reduced diameter. If used hard (say running a rally) it could break, at the point of heavy corrosion. The pits and holes create stress risers as well. Anti roll bars on competition/performance cars are hollow tube to reduce weight.
