1964 Monza Front Drum Warped
Posted by: Six Gun Joe ()

Hello,

Hoping someone on here could give me some helpful advice. I've been trying to get my car road legal, all I have left is the brakes. I've replaced nearly everything except the drums and shoes. Everything is factory except that I upgraded to a dual master cylinder.
I am pretty sure one of the front drums is warped because the wheel locks up under light braking, as an experiment I switched the drums in the front and then the opposite wheel locked up when braking.
Now my problem is that I can't find anyone local to turn brakes and the '64 front drums seem to be very hard to find online. I have found one site that sells them used but they are turned, unfortunately with shipping they end up costing $250 which is more than I am looking to pay right now.
So, has anyone else here run into this? I did try searching the forum but found nothing helpful.

Thanks

California Corvairs list them for $80. It would fit in a USPS large flat rate box and they're about $20, if Jeff ships with USPS. Link to CA Corvairs brake drum, click here

Thanks, I did look there, but just realized I misread their checkout. It looked like a pair of drums would be $208 before shipping and shipping was around $40 but I now realize that shipping was already included in the $208. Still a little high but not as bad as I thought.

This is why it's important to post your location.

Have you checked the Corvair Ranch in Gettysburg, PA?

They're a major parts vendor (new and used), plus service. Highly regarded and more than fair according to all.

Did you try your local O'Reillys? They turn them here in South Georgia.

One quick thing to check is for any rust bulge where it mates to the hub. I had that happen once which causes a slight wobble and acts like an out of round drum.

Pep Boys does them here. It's hard to believe you can't find someone that turns drums. I think Napa does also.

Aren't 63 and 64 front drums the same? Someone have a P&A30 handy? The Junkyard Primer has no drum data. I know they are different from the earlier earlies where the drum fits to the backing plate.

Thanks for all the replies.
I live in a small town in Eastern PA, the one guy who actually had a brake lathe said it broke and he never bothered to have it repaired because he didn't use it enough to warrant the cost of repair. The garage I use told me that nowadays people just buy new brakes rather than having old ones turned.
Pep Boys didn't cross my mind because, to put it nicely, I wasn't impressed with the guys who worked there. After the kid grinding gears while pulling my car in and the guy tossing my rims aside and gouging one I decided not to go back.
Our local Napa closed but I think there is one not too far away.
Our nearest O'Reillys is over 100 miles away apparently, never been there but I like their jingle.
I did not check with Corvair Ranch.
I didn't notice any bulge but I also wasn't looking for it, I will check for that later.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

It wasn't clear to me, are these already turned?
I am still hoping to get mine turned but thanks for letting me know about yours.

No these are not turned but these are not warped. I could probably get them turned for you but my local shop that did just closed and I'll have to find one, like yourself.

With front wheels off.. check for a big difference in the area of "Drag" IE;

one drags 3/4 of the rotation, other only 1/4. If so cut a dowel just fit in the narrowest diameter of the drum. then find the largest gap. report back!

'64 drums are all alone.
You really don't want to turn early drums unless you have to since they are scarce but it sounds like one of yours needs it.
Maybe post on Craig's List for someone with a brake lathe.
I've got one but I doubt you want to drive here.
It is difficult to find someone that will do a good job turning drums or rotors. They usually cut as deep as they can to try to get them clean on one cut. I sneak up on it to cut as little as possible.

I would have never guessed that the 64 drums were different than the 63's. So much knowledge here. Too bad, I have a good set of 63 drums here that I would have just sent him for the price of shipping just to help a new guy out.. I'll bet The Ranch has them, and the drive there would be cheaper than shipping for him. You've come to the right place Six Gun!
