Dual snorkle air cleaner vs Single snorkle
Posted by: Murphy ()

I sometimes see a dual snorkle air cleaner from a 140 on a 110 hp engine. I realize four carbs would require more air, but is it a substantial difference in the volume of air intake between the two?

The dual snorkel just looks cool. Plus it's more for air noise canceling than performance. It also changes the air to a bit of a high pressure area inside the air cleaner.

With a higher pressure inside the air cleaner, does it force more air into the engine?

More air in the filter body allows better high rpm performance. No more.

A good air cleaner setup is what comes from the factory, where the air, in the case of the Corvair, comes in through louvers and is dumped into a large engine area, where the bigger stuff will either fall out into the engine bay, or be drawn through the cooling fins.

Some of this cleaner air is then drawn through a tube(s) with a slight narrowing to accelerate it, into the filter chamber, where it exits into a larger area, slowing down and dropping out more dirt, just as a river drops out sand at the mouth or wide parts.

From this pool of air, the engine draws what it needs, usually only taking the very small particles that got caught up in the flow and were not able to drop out or hit anything they could stick to.

Search for threads about raising the ends of the cross tube raised above the carb tops. The idea is straightening the airflow before entering the carbs

AMel thanks for your help finding the thread. Sometimes 'search' is easy and sometimes difficult.

NO, as much as I love the CCF format, the "Search" here is IMPOSSIBLE! grinning smiley

Is it me or is it harder to get results here on a search?

It can be if you are not following the new protocols.
Are you remembering to check the "Date" box?

I don't even bother with the search function here, it's not very useful. I always just search the site with google:

I just converted my 65 110 engine to a dual-snout air cleaner. Just think it looks more balanced. You have to get a PCV tube from a 140hp engine to make the swap.

Enjoy the Corvair!
