Speedo cable
Posted by: Wrencher ()
Date: May 11, 2020 10:05AM

So I sent my gauges in to be serviced, repaired whatever they need to the local speedo shop. The old timer there even had the odometer gears mine needs.

I know my cable doesn't move or pull out, so I pulled the RF wheel and grease cap to see what's up. Cable is snapped off right at the cap, so I pulled the housing back and the cable a mass of wadded up wire at the end of the housing. I trimmed a bit of the cable and housing and its still frozen. I pulled pretty hard on the cable from the top, and no dice, all it did was stretch the cable 6 inches.

Any thoughts or techniques? I'll order the housing along with the cable if I have to.

Yes, on late models, replace the assembly, not just the inner core, as the outer shell is usually broken/bent. That is why the inner core wrapped itself up in your spindle.

This depends on where you are!

If you are standing in FRONT of the car it is the "RF" wheel.

If you are sitting in the driver's seat it is the "LF" wheel.

Easy to get confused if don't know how the manufacturer describes it!drinking smiley

Front of engine is still in the front of engine compartment. That is why rear cover is on the rear of the block.

Drivers seated position is the normal position to describe anything on a car, boat, plane, train, covered wagon, bicycle, motorcycle. Aww heck, you get the hint.

And every official vehicle publication from manufacturer to aftermarket. Just saying....grinning smiley

I admit, "front" of a Corvair engine, was hard to get used to the flywheel being in front.thumbs up Seemed like working on a SAAB was easier after Corvairs. What? the fan belt is at the rear of the engine? Of course!

Doh! LF of coursegrinning smiley. Couldn't get through to Clarks, so I got it from Mike's Corvairs here in CA. Should see it today. Instrument cluster is back from Commercial Speedometer, Speedo was junk, but he was able to source everything I needed. It didn't occur to me that Corvair speedos were unique, but of course they drive off of the (Left Front!) wheel instead of the transmission tail shaft, as in a conventional GM product..

Clark's also has limited hours right now. I believe there was a note here or on FB.

Well, the early models (and therefore the FCs also) drive off the differential (aka transmission tail shaftwinking smiley), and....

Oldsmobile had many models drive the speedometer off the left front wheel!eye popping smiley

OK, next question. Got the cable/housing, had a Clarks part # on it, and it work perfect. My problem is with the firewall grommet. Original cable had a steel reinforced rubber grommet on the cable right behind the upper end. It fits the firewall from the outside with 3 metal 'fingers" that snap into the firewall sheet metal. No way to get it off of the housing that I can see, and the new housing doesn't come with one. Before I use a generic grommet I thought I'd ask what others have found to work. Thanks for any tips,

Hans

Steve sez: Hans what I do is IF the stock grommet still has nice rubber I cut the steel band and the rubber with shears, twist a bit to open and slip over housing and straighten back together.

I always see the grommet from under the dash, not under the car, that is curious but either way just start with the one odd spring finger into the hole in the toeboard then pop the other two fingers in place. It will seal just fine.

best wishes, Steve

Clark's sells them:
RUBBER GROMMET: Where the cable comes thru the front upper ?oor. These are not original but work. Lubricate grommet well
to slide over end of cable.
