Troy...you need to read that book I linked to...then you'll know all this..

Every setup has been built by now. How they work is controlled by the builder and their knowledge.

I'm in the middle of a custom setup now. Sadly I've been drawn away [ lost interest ].

KKK turbo used on an Audi A100 [ 1800cc ]. Mounted below engine sheetmetal and in a "Blow-thru" config.

Mounting a turbo underneath the car is one of the most challenging modifications. The area is tight with the wheel so close to the engine.

A wastegate relieves exhaust pressure ahead of the turbo to control boost with turbo speed.
A blow off valve lets off boost pressure between the turbo and engine. You can't use it in a suck through system like a Corvair because it would blow out fuel also. You could also over rev the turbo.

You only need a blowoff valve if you're doing a blow through setup or fuel injection. And only need a waste gate if you replace the stock carburetor with something bigger. The yh is the biggest boost limiting factor in stock turbo engines and I'd say nearly impossible to over boost a proper running engine with one, even with the upgraded turbo. If you replace the yh with something that flows more, a waste gate is pretty much mandatory.

Imo, any mod you make to get the stock turbo to work better, like a tighter ex hog or B/F combo, wrapped exhaust, etc, especially when going to a bigger carb, get a wastegate. The stock ex is way too restrictive, you’ll get too high head temps, and boost pressure that’s “artificially” high, without the power increase associated with higher boost. You get it making boost in first gear, and keep your foot in it for a while, or in an autocross situation, you’ll want a wastegate, it’s not just for controlling boost pressure.

Just my two cents after seeing boost pressure as high as 17 psi on a digital gauge with the YH, the power wasn’t there, temps were.

What is the advantage of mounting a turbo underneath the car? Cooler?

I'm starting to understand turbos from the book.

Anyone ever done a twin turbo setup? I found a Porsche twin turbo setup from a 3.3L 2003 911 for sale on ebay. Looks attractive, but my knowledge and skills aren't there yet.

Yup, less HEATED air going into the Engine's COOLING fan!

Tom Scalzi of Reno,NV. dida dual UNDER the sheetmetal.

In the 80's someone from Oregon did a dual as well. Rex Johnson and Marty Scarr knew the car.

Of COURSE Rex Johnson "KNEW the car".
It was HIS ! ! !
Unless he has changed it, his '69 still has a license plate frame that says, "My Other Corvair has Twin Turbos"
I believe he told me once that it used two small Subaru(?) turbos.
Maybe he will chime in on this subject.

Marty Scarr posted 2 pictures of the twin turbo car. If you search under his name and twin turbo it will come up in the search. It was about 5 years ago so change the search to cover that time frame.
