SOLD!! - Fuel Injection heads
Posted by: Seth Emerson ()
Date: April 23, 2020 08:18PM

A pair of Corvair Cylinder heads, set up for port fuel-injection. Back in the 70s, Milt Binion built a bunch of Corvair motors, adapting the current Datsun 280Z (Bosch) fuel injection system to the motors. Lots of them are still running. He adapted the Port fuel injection by adding injector bungs for each cylinder – welding them onto the intake manifold - and supplied a distribution manifold to feed the injectors. One of these motors was built from scratch to be installed in a VW bus. To do this, it was built reverse-rotated. I knew this when I bought the motor (new and never installed) The short block went to a guy in Southern California who is installing it in a Karmann-Ghia. That left me with this pair of cylinder heads. They started out as late model 95HP heads. They were completely rebuilt with new parts. (I cannot vouch for the guides.) They do not have Deep seats installed. (Unlikely they were available when these heads were built.) What the builders did was add a pair of new ports, similar to that of the 140 heads. They also built a 4-leg crossover, with a center mount for the throttle body. So what we have is a set up, ready made for an EFI installation. The 95 HP heads preclude a really-high compression set up, but a turbo installation would be a good install. I am including a few photos. Again included is the fuel manifold to feed and retain the correctly sized injectors (also included) and the pair of almost like new heads, complete with new valves and springs. $550 for the whole set-up. + shipping.

Parts list? Fuel pressure regulator? Shrouds? What are the 2 hoses going down into the shroud from the throttle body?

Joel - Two rebuilt heads, distribution tubes and a center mount box. A set of injectors and a distribution manifold to feed the injectors. The throttle body is gone - given to a local 280Z specialist. I do not remember where the two hoses went. If you have a Corsa Tech Guide, I think there is a whole article on these installations. The fuel system and all electronics would have to be fabricated.

Milt Binion's article detailing his EFI engine above, can be found in the August 1986 Communique issue. Schematics, needed parts, the whole system is clearly laid out there.

...as I sit and look at the MegaSquirt II system on my shelf...hmmmm....and make it a modern turbo set up...hmmm...or will this be another "project I never get to?" Must think about this...and this would be a really cool project!

Believe you me... going to fuel injection, especially on a turbo car is both a significant undertaking, and well worth it. It is one of those things that can be really hard to appreciate until you do it. What I come to love about having port fuel injection the most wasnt actually my biggest reasons for doing it. I knew that I should expect easier starting, a lot better throttle response, better power and alot more of it, and better fuel economy and better warm up, and thats exactly what happened, but what I have come to appreciate the most is
how clean the oil stays, and how long the plugs last! Individually, all those benefits can come from a carb in "perfect" tune but is basically impossible to get all of those benefits all in one tune and not have to keep messing with it and not making "trades".

Why must you post things like this ????. I need another project right now like a hole in my head, but I would love to do a multiport setup. Just to lazy to modify some heads, and in steps Seth. What would shipping be to 61523?

Just Seth's way of trying to get a hold of your stimulus check. Go for it! It's "free" money anyhow, right? LOL.

I remember seeing and talking with Milt back in the early 80s in Palm Springs. Of course he was driving his FI
Corvairs back then. I am thinking he was an engineer/machinist? I remember him telling me he would go to Pick A Part
and retrieve all the parts off 280Zs.

Oh I have no doubt I could make them work. I have my single injector a bank running factory smooth. Just a matter of getting the engine built up. The body on my vair has seen better days.
