If you're not much of a folkie you might not remember him. His first album was released in 1971. Some of his more famous songs are "Illegal Smile" and "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore". He was still active in the music scene and did some stuff with Iris DeMent. Iris did "Our Town" song featured on the final episode of TV show "Northern Exposure".

My favorite John Prine song is "Hello In There" about being nice to old people. I enjoy this video someone made.

I like his music as well - I seem to listen to a lot of Steve Goodman (the singer, not the Corvair Guru), from time to time, and there are quite a few collaborations between the two.

Back in the 70s at the University of Illinois, John Prine, Bonnie Kokack and Steve Goodman were some of my favorites and sometimes held concerts together. Saw John Prine in concert there many times...always a good time. He had an unusual voice, but some great stories. I can still sing lyrics to some of his songs.
