() Date: April 01, 2020 01:57PM So, I just drove down to the local Community Center, about 1 to 1.5 miles from my house. As I pulled into the lot, the car stumbled and DIED! This is not too unusual since at this short distance it hasn't really had enough time to truly get warmed-up. BUT, when I tried to restart it, all it wants to do is turn over, but won't fire. I called a friend and got a ride home. We will go back after 5:00 pm (Sheriff will be off-duty then) and drag her home. I am currently running: 140 4spd., Electric Fuel Pump, Center Mount Holley, Stinger ignition, All wires appear fine. Engine turns over. Fuel pump runs. There is fuel coming out of the accelerator pumps. Everything seems to point to a "no spark" situation. Any suggestions? How do you check a Stinger Ignition System? (I do NOT want to damage it!) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. () Date: April 01, 2020 02:04PM Of course I'm talking turbo, but it's usually been a choke issue for me. Although I did own a 110 for years that would occasionally do this. It's just dry for some reason, not getting enough gas when it should be. A little starting fluid and it starts right up. That's not me analyzing what is truly wrong with your car, that's just me saying I found that when my car would run and run and turn over and turn over but never fire up, starting fluid often fixed it. And adjusting the choke often fixed that particular problem for good. Another possibility is that your electric fuel pump is plugged up for some reason. Try changing your fuel filter/filters. I also once had to replace the fuel pump completely to fix the issue. These might seem like no-brainers, but sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. ____________________________________________ Eric C. () Date: April 01, 2020 02:10PM Thanks Eric. But she IS getting PLENTY of fuel. THAT is one of the things I checked, . . . and DOUBLE checked. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. () Date: April 01, 2020 02:15PM Hi Mel, Check for voltage at the coil with the key on. If ok, I would replace the distributor with a stock one and see if it starts. Could be in the Stinger. Mark Holmlund ![]() Re: She just DIED. ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2020 02:38PM That is a great idea...take a distributor with you. Re: She just DIED. ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2020 03:10PM Bring a spare spark plug with you. remove a spark plug boot (#2 is good) and put the spare plug into it. ground the body of the plug and try cranking it. If the spark jumps the plug gap, the ignition is probably okay. If no spark, hook a jumper from the coil negative - where the yellow lead from the dist connects - and, with the ignition on, ground - momentarily - the jumper. Just a touch. as you release the touch, a spark should jump the plug. Try doing the "momentary ground" a few times real quick. Look for a spark. If no spark, the coil is likely bad. If grounding the lead and removing it gives you a spark, the module inside the dist has probably failed. Let me know. Re: She just DIED. ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2020 06:31PM Unless there is a Passenger, good idea to bring a starter button and pins to be able to crank engine while checking things out back there! Re: She just DIED. ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2020 06:57PM Also a good idea to check to see if the distributor rotor is turning. Wouldn't be the first time that the distributor gear sheared the retaining pin. Good luck! Re: She just DIED. ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2020 07:25PM I had something like this happen, the cam on the point broke off, no spark! Re: She just DIED. ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2020 07:39PM What kind of cam gear do you have in that engine? Yes, check the ignition as described. However in the 50 plus years I have been driving our favorite car's... I have twice experienced exactly what happened to you. Turns out in both cases, the aftermarket "cast" cam gear's just broke apart. Neither time was this with a performance engine. 95hp and 110hp with automatics! And each at about 60,000 miles. Dropping the oil pan or removing a valve cover and checking for valve movement displayed the problem. May I add that this never happened with OEM cast or the billet cam gears I have ran and installed. Just an option to check after a sudden shut down. () Date: April 01, 2020 07:41PM Thanks for ALL of the suggestions! I will start tracking the issue down tomorrow. It was easier to just drag it home than try to work on it in the parking lot. I could ask a co-worker to give me a quick 1 mile tow home, but it is another thing altogether, to ask him to sit and wait while I try to diagnose, and repair my car. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. () Date: April 01, 2020 09:21PM If the cam gear broke it will crank much faster than normal because it has no compression. Don't forget that unlike most engines the distributor still turns with a broken cam gear. I don't know about the criminals but Corona takes a break during the day in some areas. () Date: April 02, 2020 05:04PM Those elec pumps just stop when filter gets plugged up. also take cap off, turn ignition on and turn over by hand to see point spark, if points are closed can also pry open at lever and should see the spark jump, that will tell you is spark is there Edited 1 time(s).
