WTB: Spyder spare tire carrier
Posted by: NMCarNut ()
Date: March 25, 2020 05:17PM

I want to buy a spare tire carrier, one with the "bump", for my 64 Spyder. I modified the carrier currently in the car to accept a Hands wheel and want to go back to a stock steel wheel spare. The carrier does not need to be new but must be nice enough to be able to be cleaned and painted to look new. If you have one to sell and are willing to ship in these crazy times let me know. needpart
Thanks!

Is the Spyder spare tire carrier different than the NA part?

Perhaps we could make a list of all the different spare tire carriers that were manufactured for our cars.
I guess the Spyder is different than the NA parts. I know the wire wheel carriers were different.
Are lates different than earlies?

Yes also. Earles have holes for bolts to hold the wheel, lates have studs the wheel sits on and lug nuts hold the wheel to the mount.

The Bump on the early tire mount on a Spyder is to hold the tire assembly slightly higher angle to miss the stainless steel turbo shield.thumbs up

I do not know if lates do this on turbo Corsas.

Then there are trunk mounts for A/C cars....winking smiley

It is a 64 Spyder specific part. The 62 and 63 Spyder used the regular spare tyre mount.

The Spare tire bump was for most of 1963 Spyders and all 64 Spyders. Just the 62 Spyders used the no bump spare tire carrier.

The change over date for the 63 Spyder using the newly designed spare tire bracket with a raised bump to allow for more clearance between the spare and the heat shield occured sometime between the 4th week of Sept 1962 and the 2nd week of October 1962. (Production began in July 62 for the 63 build)

So the facts are...that 100% of 1962 Model Spyders used the standard Monza spare bracket along with early produced 63 Spyders (first 3 months of builds).

Later built 63 Spyder and ALL 64 Spyders came with the improved Spare tire design bump...

Thanks Rick,

I have only dealt with 64 Spyders and thought it was a 64 specific item.

Tim, Yes, the K-H carrier is the same from 62-64 and unique to all others.

Here is K-H bracket and 63-64 Spyder Bracket with "bump"

The original factory wire wheel spare tire carrier wouldn't have the 3 bolt holes across the back of the mount. It also had 2 very small holes at the end of the support arm, however, I have no idea what they were there for, except to facilitate the welding of the arm to the spare tire mounting plate. I once had a "blueprint" of an original, however, I have no idea where it is today. I do remember that the arm was mounted to the spare tire carrier without the bump, and that the top side wasn't "punched" for the holes as shown in the example you provided. The spare tire carrier was one of those items that wasn't removed when people salvaged the rims and rim associated parts from a car being scrapped.

Interesting Junkman, I just grabbed this image from my photo collection. I'll have to rummage though my photos and see if any other other kh braces are different. My 63 had kh wheels and I removed my bracket and sold it with the rims to fund my paint job.

The original factory wire wheel spare tire carrier wouldn't have the 2 end bolt holes across the back of the mount. It would have the center one, since that is for the long bolt that held the tire to the mount.
For my Spyder, I welded shut the two end holes, and drilled and tapped the retaining bolt hole for the long bolt. I made the long bolt out of steel, and threaded both ends. I then used a late model locking spare tire nut, and threaded it onto the "stud" that I made. Then welded it in the center, and ground and polished it so it would appear to be "factory". I had made up a few spares at the time, and have since sold them. I had a friend that worked in a large machine shop that had a huge press, and he was able to bend the arm to the specs that I had on the "blueprint", which showed the original angles. I don't remember who supplied the original GM print to me, nor how he got it. I also got a copy of the spare tire jacking instruction that was glued onto the trunk lid, and gave that to Cal for reproducing. Somewhere, also in my collection of paper, I have the jacking instructions for the KH wheel option in conjunction with the air conditioning option. I was able to obtain these by using the original part numbers that were printed in the factory assembly manual. That was a very very long time ago, before most, if not all this information was destroyed at GM.

In regards to the small holes on the end of support arm, do you have a pic of that? I'm not home and don't have access to my image collection, but I don't recall ever seeing one with holes and I know that the one in my 63 didn't have any holes in the arm.

I won't be home for a few hours, but when I am, I'll did through my photo archives...sadly I have over 10,000 images saved to my PC.

If someone does have the specs / blueprint on the spare mount for the KH wheels, I would like to see them. I need to make one for my '64 Spyder. Unless by a tiny chance someone has one they will sell. I have KH wheels waiting to be installed on it.
