WTB LM Upper Ball Joints
Posted by: BobV66Vair ()

I can't find any sources for quality upper ball joints for my LM. Clarks says theirs are made "overseas" specially for them. Rare Parts won't tell me who makes theirs. They buy out old stocks so no way to know what you will get.

Anyone have a pair for sale that are Moog or similar quality?

Have people had problems with Clarks Ball Joints?

I have 3 seasons of hard autocrossing on my Clarks lowers, so far.

The boots on their ball joints are terrible. The uppers easily distort, tear, or the rubber comes out of the sleeve from just jacking the car up. They really need to have just a rubber boot and no metal band.

After replacing the upper ball joints with Clark's and both boot failing within a year, I cut the band off Clark's ball joint and removed the boot. Replaced with Clark's C637. Fits perfectly and works fine so far.....

That's exactly what their ball joints SHOULD come with!

"or the rubber comes out of the sleeve from just jacking the car up".

That just happened to my new (old stock) TRW Upper.

I've got both Clarks Lowers, and TRW Uppers, and the car is cut 2 coils (at least) in front - I'll see how they do.

So I'm not the only one having issues with the Clark's boots. Good to know there is a solution.

I'll see if the rubber boots and the band are the problem with them being so tight. Anyone have some Moog or TRW their willing to sell me?

I found these TRW joints on Amazon for only $24.39 each. They say they will fit the Corvair. Anyone know if this number is actually correct?

Damn. The TRW shown are now Chinese? I am looking for NOS. The McQuay Norris mentioned by Matt may be the best choice. I am a little worried because the photos they show picture rust on the outside of the ball-socket. I worry that there may be rust inside.

JO, those TRW JBJ920 are for a van. Only three holes.

Also, I pulled the sleeves and boot remnants off the joints I took out. I cleaned them and lubed them. Then I ran them through many cycles in every position to be sure the grease was disbursed. Both are still pretty hard to move. One seems to have a little catch in one spot. The fitment between the ball and socket is really tight. Less that .001. I don't know if that's normal. I suppose I should put one back in to see if it feels any better. I'll let you know.

Did you try pumping grease into them as you are moving them?

Yes I did pump grease into them as I moved them. They seem to be too tight in my opinion. I put one well-greased joint back into the car. It is so tight I can't move the spindle without a mallet. The effort to move the spindle is way beyond the spec.

I am going to buy a pair that were offered by another Forum member. They ran well for AutoX so they should be loose enough for my track car.

The guy who sold me the McQuay joint is terrible He sent me unusable joint and when I tried to return it, he refused. I left a bad review buy eBay does nothing to help. I went to the bank to get the payment back. I doubt I will get anything. Meanwhile, avoid movieman for parts. He sucks. I think he makes money selling junk and then refusing to take it back.
