Turbo Body Exhaust Cutout - Help Needed
Posted by: flat_six ()

Does anyone out there have a pic or at least a car to look at for comparison? Just removed the rear grill on my 66 and saw this. Pretty sure its not right and I should hammer everything back and weld what looks like a tear/crack.

The left side of this "feature" looks like it is factory stamped.

I have a piece [turbo cutout] I bought from the ranch some years ago, and it does not have that tear

Or the bent area to the left of it?

Yup - you got me! Its the area of the air exhaust grill recess adjacent to the cutout.

I assume that the area shown, if different from a standard Corvair, is all related to the exhaust cutout.

Sorry for the confusion.

I found this pic on another thread which shows the pinchweld of the opening flat and smooth through the transition from the top to the side of the opening. I'm wondering if mine should look like that, or if the turbo, because it was a different stamping due to the cutout, was different.

It's the same... All rear grills fit.

My old 66 Turbo Coupe had a tear in the same spot, from the thin area between the grill and tail pipe being bent out / caught on something.

I think that might be the common thread here. That is a weak area on the turbo body valance. GM should have put a support strut out to that piece.

I'm guessing that area should look like any other LM.

Yes it's a weak and somewhat vulnerable area. Last one I saw damaged was from loading on a trailer or flatbed.
I would be afraid to weld it up because the paint might be melted.
Having both side screws that mount the exhaust air grille in place should help sturdy it up.
I would be inclined to just live with it for now. Maybe someone has some ideas.

Yeah I forgot to mention that I'm disassembling the car for strip and repaint. That's how I found the crack.

This car was loaded on a ship in 1970 and shipped to London. Probably lots of things were bent in that process.
