Cylinder 1 and 6 not firing
Posted by: F4UCorsair45 ()

I recently did an exhaust job on my 1965 140, and I noticed that cylinders 1 and six weren’t firing. I had originally thought it was just cylinder 1 and thought it was the plug wire or compression. But after finding that it had good compression and the wire still worked. I noticed that the 6th didn’t run either. I was wondering if since 1 and 6 are the farthest from the primary’s, do they not get fuel at idle. If that’s the case do they get fuel when the secondary’s open or when the engine revs higher.

I’d love input or help getting them to run. I do need a uni-syn to try to synchronize the carbs but I’m tight on cash right now but that’s definitely in the future.

Are the plug wires on in the correct order?

The reason I ask is that just happened to me! I put the wires on and reversed 2 wires.

Unless you have an air leak near those spots it probably isn't fuel. Keep in mind that all other engines run just fine on 2 carbs.

I’ll make sure I don’t have plug wires switched. And I put F.A.S.T electronic ignition from Clark’s on it so I don’t know if that has anything to do with it

How about a little arcing/carbon trail between the 2 contacts inside the cap?

Back to carbs: the reason I use primary bases on secondary positions.

Does anybody have a diagram of where the plug wires should go on the distributer

There shouldn’t be any carbon build up between the points on the distributor cap because I replaced the cap not even a month ago

Firing order 1-4-5-2-3-6. Rotation of rotor is CW

Just saw you installed pointless ign. Go back to points to eliminate the possibility of failed ign system.

Do 1 & 6 fire when the throttle is "off idle"?

It's not unusual for 140 secondaries to leak air past the throttle plates if they don't fully return to closed. This creates a vacuum leak and the closest cylinder sees a lean-misfire. The closest cylinders to the secondaries are 1 & 6.

How would one go about making the throttles close when they are supposed to.

Carefully adjust the linkage.
AND Use them OFTEN ! ! ! thumbs up
Really run them, not just getting them to crack open once in a while.

To see if the secondaries are the issue, disconnect them from the cross shaft and wire or rubber band them fully closed. look down the throats and make sure they are closed. Run t eh engine and see if 1 and 6 are firing now. If they are firing then fix the carbs/adjustments so the secondaries are closed. If this makes no difference the secondaries holding open is now eliminated as a cause.

All of these fixes!

Just put your hand over the top of the secondary and see if the engine picks up!

All of the above tries will prove nothing if the throttle plate is off center and not sealing!

I put my hand over the secondary on the passenger side and it did make a difference, the drivers side not so much. I think I need to mess with the secondary on the drivers side. It doesn’t seem to be sucking air but it could be through seals and stuff. Anyhow does anybody know how to make my throttle plate shut all the way on my passenger secondary or know how to help make it not suck air at idle.
