95 HP RPM max?

Random question here. What is the maximum safe RPM/redline for a 95 HP engine ('65 and up)? I've read the Chevrolet charts that only tested it to @4,400 RPM but I drove one yesterday that was basically stock and it did all right up to @4,800 or so.

It will do any rpm you want to take it to but I would limit to 6000 or close. Over that the engine is so inefficient you are not making any power. 5500 rpm could be your max rpm but when the engine stops accelerating at a decent rate you may as well shift. It is a matter of feel and learning how your car/engine works best.

On the track at Hastings, my 95/PG revved until it wouldn't.

On the straights, I would downshift into Low gear, and let it wind up until the MPH stopped climbing, basically.

Yes, I recognize this wasn't good for it. Its a bone-stock 95, that I didn't care much about smiling smiley

I've had a turbo, 110 and a 140. My current vair is a 95. Surprisingly it has
Virtually the same grunt off the line (torque) but you have to shift it sooner
Because it doesn't make power past 5000 rpm (horsepwer). I put a tach in mine
And I've determined that it's best to shift somewhere around 4500 to 5200. After
That it's just not making any horsepower. Single valve springs, compression ratio, cam profile etc. I have taken it to 6000 just to see what's up ,but it's just making noise. So I would say redline 5800.

You better watch it and care a little bit before you blow it. That 95 hp engine can be made to run real good and last a long time even doing track days.

Ken-
The 'little 95 that could' has been beat on for a long time. It's got 3 blown head gaskets, and almost a full tooth missing on the cam.

There's a rebuilt 140 sitting next to the car in the shop - the two will soon be together.
