For the Guru's: Can a bent camshaft be straightened?
Posted by: 2manyvairs2fix ()
Date: February 11, 2020 04:52PM

I have had an Otto OT20 in my possession for about 15 years. I removed it from a running car back then. I recently tried to install it only to find that upon torquing the block it locks up the rotating assembly. I have verified that the crank is fine. I guess at sometime during my ownership it received a knock. There is no visible damage that I can see. So the question to the engine specialists is can a camshaft be straightened?

Are you doing the rubber hammer procedure while torquing the case bolts in stages?
Did you try the cam in the block alone to verify the cam is the problem?

I've straightened two Corvair cams that were bent by guys installing the gear with a press. Did yours receive a new gear by chance?

Yes, I use the mallet during torqueing procedure. Yes the cam by itself will not spin. And yes,it did get a new gear installed (not by me). I suspected the gear and removed it. I will see if I can set it up and get a measurement of the deflection during rotation. It will be a day or two. Thanks for the responses.

Can you put it in the block half and slowly rotate it to see which end comes out of the block.

Do you have any "V" blocks or access to a lathe? Easy ways to check.

This has me thinking. Bent Cam? Making the engine stop turning? I'm sorry but I don't think so!

The cam would have to be bent at a 90 degree angle to stop turning. Tight maybe in a spot but to not turn at all? There has to be something else stopping things from turning.

I was trying to locate a NOS 304 cam several years ago. A few folks in the group warned me to watch out for NOS cams that were not straight and would lock up or bind severely when the case halfs were torqued down. These cams got into the GM spare parts inventory because thats what happened on the assy line. I bought a Clarks 304 repro as was good.

Along the same lines as to what J.O. says. I had a slightly bent 304 a few years ago. I straightened it and haven’t seen any side effects. Current engine I’m building for another project is getting a new Clark’s 304.

Gee, I'll have to get the NOS 304 cams I have checked for straightness. Thanks for the reminder about that issue.

I know a lot of folks here do their own stuff but if help is needed I would suggest
American Custom Camshafts in So Cal. I used to do business with them back in the 80s
but I am sure they are still around. They were on Citrus Ave. in Covina. That is all
they did: camshafts.

I set the cam in a half block and measured deflection on all four journals and the worst one was inside rear which showed a maximum of a slight bit more than one thousandth. Although I would have preferred zero, it seems that I had an exaggerated memory of the problem. The cam gear was the culprit in this instance. Is that amount of deflection going to cause any problems with the build? I am going to have the cam polished before use. Thanks again for all the "food for thought".

Just because you can, does not mean that you should.

In the facility I work in, we straighten steel bar every single day (on a CNC straightener).

Sometimes, It likes to go back to being bent, depending on its internal stresses, and that aluminum block isn't going to do much to stop it.

.001" is less than the clearance so maybe not too bad?

.001" runout is FINE! the shop manual states that the max allowable runout for the cam journals is .002"... you are good to go on the runout.
