I just put in a new speedo head and headlight switch in my instrument cluster and am ready to install. i forgot to mark the bulb sockets for the temp and gen lights. one socket is red, one is black. Anybody know which one goes where. It"s so cold in my garage i cant think straight. 62 monza

Compare the wire colors on the sockets to the 62 wiring diagram in your 1962 GM Corvair Shop Manual Supplement. Or you could turn on the ignition (not start the engine) and disconnect the wire from the oil pressure sending unit. The tell tale light that goes out when you do this is of course the Temp/Press one.

Does the housing give the wire color next to the bulb opening like the LM instrument housings do?

Brn / tan socket & DBL / tan socket temp per the shop manual.

IF memory serves me....the Gen light socket has a brown wire on it, the oil temp/pressure has a dark blue wire... IF the harness hasn't been molested.

Worst case scenario. unplug the oil pressure sending unit plug on the engine, mount your bulbs in their sockets, turn the key on. The one that does not light is the oil pressure/temp light. If installed backwards, reverse them.

These bulbs are not grounded by the dash, so they light just fine dangling below the dash. No need to mount them to see which turns off when un-plugging the oil pressure switch.thumbs up

The GEN/FAN light has two wires. The OIL/TEMP light has only one wire.

Both have 2 wires!

The best thing to do is pull the oil press wire off the engine, turn the key on and the bulb not lit is the temp/press light.

The OIL/TEMP light has only one wire

It gets +12 and grounds through the oil pressure or high temp switch, so without looking at a wiring diagram, it should have two wires.....winking smiley

This is why both lamps will light dangling out of the dash, engine off, ignition on.

Yeah, I remembered incorrectly on the one-wire/two-wire part.

Kerry has it right: "IF memory serves me....the Gen light socket has a brown wire on it, the oil temp/pressure has a dark blue wire... IF the harness hasn't been molested"

Thanks for the responses, It dawned on me about 15 minutes after i posted to unplug the sending unit and turn the key. If anybody is interested, on a stock 62 monza wiring harness al the dash light sockets are metal except the temp/gen lights. The temp/press light socket is red plastic with a brown and blue wires, the gen/fan is black plastic with brown and black wires. I'm embarrassed i even ask a question with such an simple solution. I had a case brain freeze. I do have another problem though. I would like to see how my new speedo works. Keep in mind i have not driven this car since October. The two small square pedals under the dash, can anyone off the top of there head tell me witch on is the clutch and witch one is the brake. I forgot to mark them and i hate paging through the manual. thanks.

With a proper functioning brake system, the pedal that goes all the way to the floor would be the clutch.

REALLY!!!! You have got to be trying to pull a fast one on the pedals. Either that or a Google search is needed about how to drive a manual transmission equipped car/truck.
