LM Convertible Windshield Header Trim Reassembly
Posted by: flat_six ()

I'm stripping my vert down for body/paint. Eventually will have to reassemble the trim around the windshield, including the stainless strip at the top and the chrome corner pieces.

Just wondering if there is a good (preferably factory) resource for how to apply sealant, what sealant to use, etc to ensure it doesn't leak.

The assembly manual covers final assembly, but the body is complete at that point. The 66 body manual does not cover trim installation.

Mike:

I have been re-installing my chrome trim around the windshield for the past
week or so. When I removed the trim, I made a note where the existing "putty"
was placed in the inside of the chrome pieces. To remove the putty and avoid
scratching the inside of the chrome trim, I used a combination of glugone and
a wooden paint stir stick. Then washed the parts in soap and water. I then
went to Lowes and purchased a tube of 25 year latex caulk. I caulked the same
inside areas and replaced the trim. On the chrome side trim, I purchased a roll
of black stickey 2 sided foam tape, which like the original, goes between the
pieces of chrome trim. The tape was found on the internet. I am very happy with
the results.

An autobody supply store should be able to supply putty cords. They come between two sheets of wax paper and are about a foot long and there are several per package. Urethane should also work fine.

Thanks Tom. Unfortunately, the previous owner had the car painted years ago and removed all evidence of where the original putty was. I also did not know that there was double sided foam tape involved. Hopefully someone will provide some details of where the sealant needs to be applied. Pictures are always awesome.

3M #8509 auto body and glazing compound is great for this type area. Also works great for kick panel vent assemblies and is the most correct material I have found for EM windshield gasket to body sealing.. Someone above mentioned strip caulk which will work but it is pretty hard and is hard to squash when installing something like the header or kick panel units. I would not use latex of silicon caulks.

Mike:

Here is an inner side picture of the corner trim cap before I cleaned the putty
out. The top of the trim cap in the picture faces the interior so there is no
putty in that area (can't be seen in this picture). So you will need to install
putty or caulk in the side areas and the bottom area that faces the windshield.
I will try to send a pic of the inner side of the long trim cap which is attached on the top of the windshield frame. Hope this helps.......

That is very helpful Tom. It seemed like the factory would seal these trim pieces forward close to the windshield. It seems like there is a little drain gutter in the windshield header to drain off any water that did get past the sealant.

Mike:

Here is a picture of the top trim piece. Again, the caulk or putty is on the
inner front which faces the windshield (top of photo) and the sides of the trim piece. There is no caulk or putty on the inner side which faces the interior
(bottom/ photo). Once cleaned, I elected to use 25 year latex caulk which was
used in the original location of the factory installed putty per this picture.
In a hard rainstorm, water should then only enter the area between the top trim
pieces and the windshield chrome trim. This water should then drain out both
drain holes in the body which are located in both lower corners of the windshield
channel.

Interesting. It looks like the sealant along the front edges is black, while the corners appears grey.

Maybe that is just the camera angle? Or maybe the sealer near the edge just got dirty over the years...

I'm a stickler for using automotive products for my car, so I want to be able to specifiy the right body sealer at the paint store.

Thanks for the pics!
