Turbo Cam
Posted by: JimBrandberg ()

What are folks liking for a stock 180 HP turbo cam these days?
Is a Otto 10 or 20 turbo cam the same as it used to be? There's arguably been some liberties taken with some cam profiles in recent times. Has anyone installed one lately, did it come with a cam card and did you check it?
Has anyone bought a "304" cam lately? Did it come with a cam card and did you check it?
I've bought a few Isky 270 and 280 lately for 140s but don't know if there's an Isky available with turbos in mind.

I bought a Clarks C785 about three years ago, it is their repro 304. I'm happy with it. You can ask Clarks if they have a card

When I rebuilt my Corsa turbo engine I installed an OT-20 from Clarks. It did not come with a cam card but Clarks had cards on their website for all their cams. I could not get the card specs to match my cam profile. I then discovered that there are multiple cam cards out there with slightly different timing & lift specs for an OT-20 cam. I found at least 4 cam cards for the OT-20 - all of them different. Here are my numbers for 3 of them:

Even though I could not get the specs to line up with any card, I completed the rebuild with the OT-20 I had. My car runs great with no problems. Your mileage may vary...

The 304 is my favorite Cam. I have it in my turbos. I have a new one in the block I’m building now. That said if looking for real go I’d talk to Ray Sedman about what he can do.

My favorite Turbo cam is the one that is in now, which is approximately a TB-20, although it is a custom grind by Ray Sedman… LORDY it is a fun cam! what I really like about it is it does not seem to be so "picky" about ignition timing compared to everything else I've tried and it has an awesome powerband and easy to drive. I think if I had known what it was going to be like before I had installed it I would have run the compression ratio higher though. All the other cams I've tried seem to want to "quit" revving too soon, and the Otto TB-10 was really picky with ignition timing... too much it wanted to ping, too little it wanted to ping. I thought it was darned weird that the TB-10 could ping when going into boost going down a hill but not on level ground at the same boost and load. Rays cam aint like that at all, even when using a near copy of a 140 base timing curve and 10 degrees of vacuum advance, and 1 degree/psi timing retard into boost. 19 degrees total at over 20psi of boost and it is ping free and moving the freight!! On pump gas and no water injection!

So Kevin... What are the specs on your Sedman cam?

From memory, 112 lobe separation angle, something like 273 duration and .460
intake lift. I don't remember the exhaust numbers but they are different, and the cam ramps are smoother... it doesn't squeeze the lifters quite as hard as the TB-10 and is MUCH quieter with valve noise compared to the other cams I tried, which were the TB-10 (schnieder version), 62-66 NOS "replacement turbo cam", and the 63 stock turbo cam.

Ray said his version of the TB 20 was very similar to the early Otto parts TB-20's that were done before they got dumbed down. It is a freaking awesome cam!!

I just bought a TB-20 and am cleaning a block. Hope to have an opinion by Summer.

Cam is on the workbench if any simple measurements help. I just read that it is dumbed down, so that is exciting to know. Anyone running this cam now?

I had someone say that some folks like Isky 260 in a turbo. It seems a little uninspiring, sort of like a 889 used in 95 HP engines. They did put them in 140 PG. Any comments appreciated.

I installed the OTTO TB 20 during my rebuild. It did not come with a card, but I was able to source that info from Clarks. The cam did not spec to the card. The cam has been fine, pulls strong off boost. I am currently dialing a new head configuration and re-jetting the Weber.

Bob Helt’s book says the 260 is equivalent to the 304 cam, or the “889 cam + 1 step”. Should be a good stockish turbo cam if accurate.

Bought Clarks C7722 for my 64 spyder. Not a 180 per say, but basically.

C7722 is listed as a 260. I like the analogy that a 260 is a 889 + 1.

I like Bob Helt's writing about cams, lots of good stuff there.

Sometimes the OT-20 natural aspirated cam is reported to be a little noisy in some of it's configurations since Otto. Anything along those lines with the 20 turbo cam?

The noise is usually from roller rockers, a mild hyd cam with stock rockers should be quiet ?? Mike

I thought some of the OT20 cams were ground incorrectly and they made noise.

It wasn't just the OT20's, it was the first batch that Schnieder ran... I had a TB-10 from that batch, it was just as noisy as an OT-10 that was purchased around the same time on someone else's car. This is what I was talking about with "squeezing the lifter too hard"... the lifter cant adjust out all of the lash and makes it noisy.

Send it to Sedman, he has a cam doctor or put it in a block with crank and one cylinder and degree it and make your own cam card. Mike
