Tail/backup lamp function

Any thoughts or advice on EM tail lamp grounding? I'm thinking I should make a grounding harness to avoid issues? Or does the factory method of grounding through the retainer prove reliable? I'm aware that most electrical issues are due to ground as opposed to a "short" circuit, looking for dependability....

Once corrected properly... very little problem with the factory setup.

I've found that a lot of them have issues grounding between the socket and housing. A small sheet metal screw at the crimp solves that.

I solder a ground wire to EM tail light sockets and run it in to the engine compartment along with the positive wires. I have never had brighter lights. Been doing that on my Vairs since 1971. I dress the wiring so it looks like factory.

How do you get the ground wire through the body grommets?

I do the same, often the improvement is noticeable.

Adding a ground wire from the headlight socket to a good ground location in the trunk tends to improve the headlight brightness. Even when the factory ground has continuity there can be enough electrical path resistance to reduce amperage and the lights will be dimmer. The stock headlight wiring use a ground wire from the socket to the bucket, then the bucket gets screwed to the body, etc. Not unusual to find corrosion at the connection points after all these years.
