How do you test a speedo if it is out of the car and you don't have and spare speedo cable laying around? And how do you know it is/will read(ing) the correct "speed"?

A square drive bit will fit, look at the max RPM label on the drill, then look at the Revs per mile label on the speedo, then do the math. I also have a non contact digital tach to look at various speeds.

Slow speed craftsman 19.2v drill gets about 60 mph. I don't use high speed as it it too touchy on the trigger.

I will look and see if I have one I can let loose.

If its good at 60, should be good enough most everywhere for normal driving.

OK, got the drill-- Clockwise rotation as you look at Speedo from rear?

Just wanted to make sure- didn't want to turn a working Speedo into a non-working Speedo--grinning smiley

Usually it won't hurt anything to run these old ones in reverse. Ask Matt he used to work at a used car lot. VBG

Speedo to wheel is direct connection. How fast can you drive in reverse? Won't hurt it. GM engineers knew how to set it up. I just wouldn't hit max drill speed anytime when doing test. Smooth trigger control, just like with a gun. Slow and easy is the way to proceed with any testing.

Wow! I went on a day-trip right after writing this. Thanks all for the responses. I will look them over and respond as needed.

My reason for wanting the speedo is that I want a working odo again. I use a gps app to track my speed while driving but it doesn't permanently track my mileage and I have to write every trip down in a notebook.

Eric:

Call Jeff at California Corvairs to get one. $80 but that will be the price from anyone. If you can find one with a dead speed section, you can swap the odometer parts into yours.

Thanks Al. I guess now I need to find a speedometer that is broken but has a working odometer.

If both the odometers don't work, then it's usually a stripped gear on the main input shaft or intermediate shaft. The odometers by themselves rarely fail (the numbers do deteriorate). The Corsa models had to use metal odometer drive gears due to the higher torque and when the lubricant dries out the gears wear out. I rebuilt a few decades ago, but parts are now difficult to find. Also - after a rebuild you have to take the speedometer to a shop with the old time magnetizing unit to calibrate the speedometer.

Never read where Eric said trip meter wasn't working. Just the odometer. Can't read into a problem without asking questions.

Agreed - that's why I posted "If BOTH the odometers don't work".
