Curious what cores are worth. I guess I could check Clark's?

Lol. If I could get $50 each I would probably be motivated to sell about 100 of mine!

My guess regarding the "Core Value" of these items through Clark's is that they need to account for the number of cores that won't actually be returned for credit.
IF they can acquire a core for $5.00 or even $25.00 and charge $50.00 for it as a part of any sale and the core is not returned, it adds to their profit margin.
The $50.00 "Value" likely covers their effort to seek out, acquire, clean, ship, and replace acceptable cores to rebuild while making it worth their time. JMO

The reason that the core value is so high is because it motivates people to return them. You can't be in a rebuilding business unless you can get the cores back. There is a big difference between buying cores outright and the value to get the cores back. I had a car that the core value exceeded the cost of the purchase of the rebuilt part, just so you would return the cores.

If you watch for when Clark's is actually buying cores outright, it hardly covers the cost of shipping.

J.0. You are right about their core buy back when compared to their resale prices. Not worth the time to put together a box of cores to go to them. Steel prices are down, so no opportunity there either.

But come summer, my used steel parts (like engine tins) will be slimmed out to get rid of what I don't need. Some aluminum will be gone too, like 5 engine blocks.

Just put a factory rebuilt kia transmission into a 2006 kia spectra last week.I thought the price of the trans was reasonable,(about 700 bucks)but I almost s__t when they told me the core charge was 1000.00.

We could do a batch of machined idler brackets, maybe with a heavier bearing?

That is getting really close to the worst place to add weight to a Corvair and as far as I know the original bearing is great. I've only replaced one and just because I noticed that it was a little noisy when I had the belt off.
Maybe worth it if a more common bearing could be used.

Bob:

Did you have a price you will pay for cores? Just curious as I only have 1 left. Jeff at California Corvairs got the rest of mine.

I offered 7 for $50, plus shipping. No response. How much is Jeff paying for them?
