EM clock question(s)
Posted by: Grandpacorvair ()

Hi,

First I need a solenoid for the EM on dash clock. If you have a non-working movement, or maybe you upgraded to quartz?

Along those lines does anyone know what, if any, other cars used that movement?

If anyone has successfully rewound the solenoid can you tell me what gauge wire you used?

Thanks

Kerry

Most of the car clocks used the solenoid type drive motor in those days. I have no idea how to cross reference them. What typically kills them is when the car is sitting for a long period and the battery gets weak. It doesn't pull the full stroke and then it fires very often, the coil heats up and gets cooked. There must be plenty of parts clocks out the, rewinding sounds like a tough way to go.

This clock failed on bench test. Ran 5 days without issue, then suddenly the coil went up in smoke. The contacts were not stuck plus I have designed a transistor circuit that reduces current across the contacts to almost nothing.

So the transistor was carrying all the current to the coil.. That almost has to be failed insulation in the winding. I've seen some get so hot it cooked the board it is attached to.

Yup, and the transistor (Mosfet) is rated at 19 amps, a bit of overkill but it's what I had on hand. It also shorted out. Which came first, the chicken or the egg.. winking smiley

A fuse would have been a wonderful addition... hindsight is always 20/20!

Well if the transistor shorted, that would be well beyond the duty cycle of the coil. Did you have a diode to block the counter EMF when it shuts off. That's what kills the contacts on the factory design.

Yes it has the flywheel diode..it's necessary to protect the transistor..

I believe all GM clocks of the Corvair days were made by Westclock.

This is a Borg clock, or more accurately an Amphenol Borg clock. I think you are also correct as I have seen Westclock movements in use.

This guy claims they usually burn out near the ends, don't know if you read it or not.

There be someone in the group that has parts clocks laying around. I just used my last good solenoid and it was for a Corsa clock.

For gauge of wire, just "mic" the existing wire. Size to AWG here:

Count the turns, wind new wire. Sounds easy. grinning smiley

Hams building stuff have wound coils for years. Google methods to do it at home.

Thanks, I've read that article. Unfortunately my coil had an impressive failure. Not much left to work with.

I only have working spare OEM Corsa clocks. No help here. I think I trashed the ones that were broken and couldn't get running.

I think that I heard years ago at a convention that the early clocks and the ones in a Corsa are the same? I believe that it was at a Tech Talk with Fred Bybee.

Instrument Services will repair clocks and put a quartz movement in them. They may have quartz movement kit you can put in yours.

Kerry:

If you are interested in one of my Corsa clocks, PM me. It is a working clock. I tested all 3 spares I have for 2 days after cleaning them. Worked the whole time without losing time.
