OT - Tail light Dilemma - Looking for an easy solution
Posted by: OttawaCorvairGuy ()
Date: January 09, 2020 05:13PM

My new to me G3500 cab and chassis has a problem with the single rear tail lights.
I stopped by NAPA today and all they had was what I already have on the truck.

I either need to find some kind of turn signal lights that I can mount alongside what I already have or a cheap replacement tail light that has 2 builds and not just one 1157 style bulb.

NOTE: I DON'T really want to buy all new replacement lights because they will come with the flatbed.

What I'm LOOKING FOR:
Is a way to mount a single turn signal light to what I already have or to the frame to get me by until the flatbed is installed.

ANY IDEAS!!

Thank you.

I'm not following what you are after. Do the current tail lights have a problem, is something missing or does Canada require separate turn signal lights?

Harbor Freight magnetic lights could be used until flatbed is installed. Hook them into the trailer light connector.

Joel,

One 1157 on each side will not work; because the truck was once an ambulance and it had separate tail lights, i.e. one left and one right for the brake lights and two separate turn signal lights.

Al,

Good idea. I'll have to go look.

But would you happen to know if they will have 2 individual bulbs per tail light?
One to be used solely for a brake light and another bulb to be used for the turn signal.

You should be able to fix the wiring to solve that issue. I haven't worked on a van that new but I'm pretty sure it has the brake light run through the turn signal switch like Corvairs do. My '95 G30 does.
They probably tapped into the brake light wire between the switch and turn signal switch to run the brake only lights.
The HF lights I've bought are single bulb style.

NOTE: I even tried one of those 6 wire to 4 wire tail light control boxes.

Call it what you will. But it simply shorts out, cancels out, over rides, each other when I used the turn signal and then apply the brakes.

I use one between my motor home tow dolly and towed car, they work fine. Did you get the powered type that uses a separate 12v source?

Joel,

I really don't think that is the issue. But I've been known to be wrong. ggg

Just like the flatbeds I been pricing.
The ambulance box had INDIVIDUAL lights.
That way both brake lights ALWAYS worked independently of the turn signals and the other way around.

Had the same situation on my Firetruck. The turn signals and stop lights and running lights are all on different circuits and wires. I ended up temporarily hooking up 2 sets of cheap trailer lights. 1 set hooked to the turn signals, 1 set hooked to the brake lights, and both sets hooked to the running/parking lights.

I guess that is what I'll have to do until the flatbed gets I installed.

I'll need to find out which way I have to mount the lights.
Turn signal lights on the outside or the other way around.

Did you happen to put tape over the extra license plate lens?

Do the same thing with the magnetic trailer lights. Set up brake and tail in one set and turn signals in the other set. That way there will be no confusion with which lights are on. Just have to make adapter wire harness to hook to the trailer connector on the light sets. Dont cut up the harness on the light sets, in case you want to use them anywhere else or sell them.

If you go that way look at these . I have a HF utility trailer, good bang for the buck. More than several years old now and they sent me a set of these FREE. Some kind of recall, low current BRIGHT

I bought one of the HF LED trailer light kits probably 5 years ago maybe a little longer. The wires corroded and fell apart. I spliced and patched them a couple of months ago and now one has failed again. I'll to replace all the wires. The LEDs are still ok. (assuming this latest failure is the wires again)
Trailer has never been exposed to salt and the wire is all run in conduit.

So Tony, when I did the final wiring on the firetruck, I ended up using one of these to get the lights to merge into one circuit without shorting things out:

Ryan,

I've installed one too and it does not work on this truck. Maybe the new controller is bad..

I think mine is 6 wires in and 4 out. I'll go look..

I am running to powered version on my motorhome. WHY, the the hazard flasher switch Workhorse AKA Chevy could not handle the extra current of more lights. Smoked it, never blew a fuse. Both expensive and a total PITA to replace. I have all LEDs now but still use the powered unit. If some thing shorts, it will take out the unit not your vehicle.
