Help needed. LM rear wheel yoke
Posted by: bruces ()
Date: January 08, 2020 10:44AM

On my late model, I can't seem to get the yoke to fit back onto the spindleconfused smiley
I removed it using an impact gun on the puller, and it didn't seem to put up too much of a fight.
After cleaning and greasing the splines, the yoke won't slide on very far. I tried to snug it down using the nut, but ended up stripping the threads(on the nut). What next???

So does this mean that the yoke can’t really be installed while the spindle is on the car??

There is a Kent Moore J- tool that was designed use to put the yoke on the spindle in the car. There is a photo and number for the tool in the '65 shop manual. If you are lucky maybe someone near by has one you can borrow, or be able to make one after seeing the photo.

Bruce apparently you did NOT remove the bearing assembly from the car?

Ha, it’s on the car. I had removed it to inspect the bearing. I re installed the spindle and brake assembly thinking I would be able to snug the yoke on using an impact wrench. Didn’t turn out so well...

I have used the factory J-tool that's designed to pull the yoke into place. The large threaded shaft in the J-tool threads onto the stub axle threads so if you have stripped those threads it's not likely the factory tool will do the job though it's worth trying.

If the stub axle threads are really wiped out, you're going to have to replace it. sad smiley

Take bearing housing out of torque arm and use press to get yoke down where it belongs.
