I think that estimate is low.

Hasn’t beat 85K last 2 auctions, on body #2. Why do you think it’s low?

No, you're thinking of Barrett-Jackson.

FYI, last year at this auction a Yenko hit $200,000. When I first saw the car, Mecum posted an estimate of $65,000 to $85,000. A few days later it was revised to $75,000 to $100,000. Usually their bid estimates are a bit optimistic. In the case, it was way under.

I checked out YS-043 today. It’s a good race worthy Yenko but maybe not quite as clean as last year’s Yenko. We’ll see. Prices at this auction have been a bit more tempered than last year. I’m a registered gold bidder with Mecum which means I spend a bit too much time and money there.

YS-074 that sold last year for 200k was my old car. While it was one of 5 or so original Stage 3 cars, the 200k was a fluke. The right drunks at the right time most likely filling out a collection.

YS-043 was restored in 1990 by my crew chief Jeff Moore and when he restored it, was a better restoration than what they did to YS-074. YS-043 has been raced on and off for close to the last 30 years and I am sure is starting to show some wear.

YS-043 has some exceptional race history back in the day when Jim Schardt owned it.

YS-043 should pull between 75-100k

Auctions are a funny place. Although trends are established if certain cars consistently bring highe or lower sums, those trends can change. Example would be Corvettes from 58 to 69. They were rising yearly, the 63 split rear window first reaching stratospheric levels then surpassed by 67’s with BB power. Of course the market became flooded with matching number fakes, prices have dropped for the past 3 years. Mopar cars with hemi’s were the holy grail for a while. Only about 670 Hemi Cudas were built but somehow they reproduced by 4 times that many.

Corvairs have been getting much more attention the last year or two. Look at the 66 Corsa convertible that just sold at Mecum today for almost $19K. We noticed rust issues by the front door hinge post. The engine compartment was a bit unkept, interior was barely OK. Value ? Maybe $9K.

Hagerty’s and a few other publications have written well of our cars and that brings attention to the car. Good for us if we’re selling, bad if you’re buying.

Where will YS-043 land ? My guess is above $100K. Why ? Because the “two drunks with money” paid $200K last year. Cars ARE NOT A GOOD INVESTMENT. Old cars are a hobby like fishing, hunting, golf, etc. when I buy a car, I go into it knowing I will be spending more than I will ever get back. Although I have the means to buy YS-043 (within reason), I would only do so if I could race it.

BTW, last year’s 65 Ford GT 40 that was the only prototype roadster to race LE Mans is available to any of you today. Last year’s $9.8 million didn’t meet reserve but it’s now for sale for only $12 million.

While we are on the subject of big money auctions the "Bullitt mustang is going through Mecum's on Friday, I am interested to see what that makes. An iconic car driven by an iconic man in an iconic film! Not a corvair I know but any classic car man has got to be watching that one.
