Is it Pak or Pack Connector and what is the number for the Headlights? - Thanks
Posted by: OttawaCorvairGuy ()

ALSO - Does it matter if they are silver color or brass/cooper color terminals - for how well they conduct and how long they last?

Thanks

Matt,

Thanks for the link. However, I need just the Plastic connector and a suppler that can keep providing them..

I thought the brass would be and I believe I recall someone telling me the same when I asked with my older computer.

Oddly - a lot of the relays them self don't have brass for the flat terminals.

BTW - For a couple of hours this morning I've been doing the BEST I can on Waytek to find stuff for my circuit idea.
They are one of the places that I have not found any Brass terminals yet.

PS I'm also trying to only have to order from no more than 2 vendors.. Craig and whoever...
Currently I'm making a spreadsheet with Part Numbers and prices.
Waytek was the one I decided to start with this morning...

When it comes to automotive terminals, especially the older style, you will not find any one supplier that has it all.

If you want just the plastic holder go to the auto parts store and buy whatever pigtails you need and pull the connectors out. All it takes is a small flat screwdriver.

But then I have these people by me that have just about anything you need for the older automotive. STATE WIRE AND TERMINAL
They have the "pigtails" but not just the plastic housings.

I forgot to add that they also have an AUVECO catalogue and that has a lot of different stuff you don't find everywhere.

Here's a source for the connector shell: Click here

You should be able to find alternate sources using the part number at that site.

Brass is probably better if you can keep it from tarnishing. That is probably why they plate brass with something that doesn't tarnish.

In answer to the original question GM was using "Packard 56" series connectors!

They were NOT water proof and not very reliable when new. 50+ years later, YUK!

Just my opinion!

Headlight connectors are Packard/Delphi/Aptiv Series 59.

I've never had issues with the connectors on Corvairs. I did have one on my International corrode away to nothing but it is from up North.

Connector issue on dimmer switch, yes, due to wet feet getting into cars.

But the headlamp connector? Rarely an issue. Especially on a Corvair, where they are protected.

I've not had much luck finding the Packard 59 terminals for the headlight connector in both brass and for 12ga wire.

And all the terminals for the relay which I believe are Packard 56 are also hard to find in brass and for the different size wires I want to use.

Sadly - I had all this stuff bookmarked on my other computer.

What metal are they available in? Most electrical connectors in electronics are not brass! OK, brass, but coated with tin, gold, etc.

Oh, a quick search found no material specification, and only 14-16 AWG range....confused smiley

Frank,

If you check with www.terminalsupplyco.com you will find the Delphi-Packard 56 and 59 series connectors.

They indicate that the male and female connectors are made of "Tin Plated Brass" or "Tin Plated Copper" depending on which terminals you are looking at.

The 'tin plating' is supposed to reduce corrosion!?

The largest wire most of the terminals take is 14awg. A couple are listed that use 12awg wire but I don't think they fit the Headlight connectors.

JMHO!? eye rolling smiley

Frank, that has been my problem.

Even if I were to use a coated terminal. I've not been able to find the 12ga Packard 59 again, since years ago on my now fired computer.
