Anyone know the approximate date GM stopped installing the wedding band tail lights? October, November, end of the year?

My January built Los Angeles car had them. Of course they could have been changed, but given the low build numbers at LOS, maybe they had a supply longer.

I understand the change over point was somewhere before April 1966. My original 66 was built at WR, and that is an October car (has wedding ring style). I have seen cars as late as March 1966 builds with them.

Keep in mind that GM was using up 65 style headlight bezels on early 66 built cars as well...

Hope this helps.

My '66 has '65 style headlight Bezels. I will put '66 style NOS one on it I have. Unless someone has an NOS set of '65 bezels they'll sell me for $150 or less?

Change happened early February 1966.

Mine was built in second week of Feb and had the second design. I have data on two cars from the first week Feb and one from January - all had Wedding band.

Craig replies: You can add my 1/31/66 WRN Corsa to that list; it had wedding band lights when I bought it in '71.

Thanks Craig.

I jokingly tell people that my car was the very first one to receive the second design lenses. Hey - it IS possible! smileys with beer

My former '66 500 is a late September car, so it does not help answer the original question, but for the sake of anyone who may not be familiar with the "wedding band" lenses, here's a shot of them. (Photo taken when the car had fewer than 20,000 miles on it.)

When did they start using the Wedding ring style. My 65 Corsa with a build date of second week of December 65 at WRN has these. I know them to be original to the car.

Your build date has to be December 65 to be a 65 model year. Look at your body plate. Top left will be digit(s) and letter. Indicates month and week. 12C would be 3rd week of December 1964. 5D would be 4th week of May 1965

Craig replies: The thin-ring wedding band style came into use at the beginning of the 1966 model year i.e. late August 1965. The wide-ring version that offered better retention of the ring came into use in April 1966.

The term "Wedding Band" only applies to the short-lived 1st design MY 1966 lenses.

So it would appear the 65 and 66 rolled through the WRN plant at the same time. I know my body tag is date coded the 2nd week of december 65 and you are stating that 66 production at WRN started in August of 65 which would be a correct lead time. I just "assumed" there was a production cutoff or retooling date and you would not have 65 and 66 production at the same time. That is more where my question was.

Any Corvair built in December of 1965 would be a 1966 model. They would not have two model years going down the line at the same time.

Did you look at the body data plate in the engine compartment to get the date code in the top left corner?

Body Tag Build Date 12B decodes as 2nd week of december next line is 65-10737 WRN 3938 decodes as a 65 model corsa coupe from Willow Run
Vin# 107375W159408
Decodes as 65 Corsa Coupe built in Willow Run
Titled as 1965 but built at Willow Run on the 2nd week of December. It is my assumption this was built the 2nd week of December 1965 since the sequence unit number is 159408 built. Possible it was built in December of 1964. Didn't think so because of the last 6 digits.
