It was interesting how early 6 cyl aircooled engines went back in history. Im looking at a 1927 Franklin.

There's a nice museum in Tucson full of restored Franklins. The TCA and CCC clubs did a group meet there a few years back.

I was born and currently live close to Syracuse, NY- Birthplace of the franklin. I always thought that was cool. I don't think Syracuse has really exploited the Franklin connection.

Who Gets Credit for the First Flat Six? Read about it here on Page 5:

Not air-cooled, but certainly a milestone. So, who was the first to produce an automobile with a flat-six engine?

Odds are, it was Walter Gordon Wilson, a British engineer who designed and manufacturer the Wilson-Pilcher line of cars. Wilson-Pilcher cars were offered from 1900 to 1907.

Equipped with either flat-four or flat-six engines, these innovative buggies were known for their smooth-running engines; a characteristic of their boxer design.

All moving parts were fully enclosed, and the engine was lubricated by a gear pump, rather than splash or gravity feed.smiling bouncing smiley

A fellow showed up at the Corvair Minnesota meeting with a Franklin. Pretty cool but it had some oil leaks.

Just watched a video on youtube last night about a 27 Franklin engine work. Pretty interesting how they were built. Talk about dirt and debris clogging up the air flow. Wow. Add to that having to remove the cooling shroud and each valve cover to oil the valve rockers on a regular basis and they must have been a bear to keep running.
Are we spoiled by today's cars or what?

Thats what I was watching. The jug head design must be fun to do a valve job.
