For Sale on N.J. craigslist TO6IOWB 1964 FC 110 PG engine
Posted by: Caraholic4life ()

I just ran across a 1964 Van engine TO6IOWB which is for a 110 PG configuration.
[cnj.craigslist.org] It is located in New Jersey with an asking price of $450.00 but not confirmed as a running engine.

Below is cut and paste information from the ad. Yes I did notice the oil fill at the top, but it appears to have the correct top cover which suggests that the correct oil fill tube, filler cap and dipstick have been removed. There was only one photo posted and no contact information other than through craigslist.

"Engine from a 1964 Corvair Van - $450 (Toms River) Posted about 3 hours ago

64-cid 110-HP 1964 Corvair engine, the original engine from a 1964 Corvair Greenbrier van. A sought-after item because it is the larger-displacement engine, produced in far fewer numbers than the earlier engines. Block code is TO6IOWB. The specific history of this engine is not known. The engine turns freely but I do not know anything further; at the very least it is an excellent candidate for overhaul. Price is negotiable within reason. Delivery is available at extra cost within a reasonable distance of my location".

I had my doubts that it was an actual FC engine with a dipstick hole in the top shroud.

But knowing it is Whenlm64's ad, I'm satisfied that it is a 64 FC engine.

Bob, I hope all is well. Good luck with the sale. I still haven't utilized the last engine I bought from you. I re-did the heads for my 80hp but haven't gotten around to installing them. The rest of the engine is on a stand in my garage, not sure what my plans are. Seeing this ad makes me remember the last trip I took with my father-in-law. Two weeks ago he passed away unexpectedly. He was the guy who took the ride with me to grab that engine from you in Lavallette. He was always taking rides with me to get stuff that I didn't need. As a matter of fact, he went with me to buy my Corvair, which required pushing it through yards of dog shit from its resting place in a back yard, all the way around the house to the tow truck. Great guy. He loved your orange Rampside, he kept bugging me to find one and sell my sedan. Maybe one day. Take care.

That is not a dipstick, it is the PCV vent. The dipstick area is flat in the picture, no hole.

Perhaps contributing to the small confusion over whether this is a true FC engine is the fact that I have a passenger car generator adapter on it. I prefer having these on my FC engines as it makes oil changes and adding oil easier. This is truly a correct '64 FC engine.

In the photo, the ports on the carb base intake part of the heads face rearward on this FC engine rather than forward like on a EM car engine. Reason?

Bob now says:

Bingo. And that's how the engine was when it came to me. Since I expect this engine to need at least a refreshing if not a more thorough overhaul, I did not concern myself with this "prior owner error."

This is exactly what I plan on doing with the 1964 FC engine I currently have in my '62 95 Van. Having both options is the ideal scenario from my perspective.

It also affords the ability when using a 1965 or later adapter, to convert to an alternator if one so chooses since the correct 1965 FC adapters might be difficult to find.

Sometimes it may be necessary to have the correct FC Oil fill and dipstick accessible from the rear hatch, but it is generally easier to fill the oil from the top of the engine if at all possible.
