The major point is this. The guy is going through a situation with a family

member. It is not anything pleasant.Health issue.

So.It is time to support him.

This is the place to send any machine shop work if you were going to send it by

freight anywhere anyhow.Even if you are in the area or nearby the right thing to

do is give this guy your business.

Here is his info.

[pwspecialties.com]

His name is Paul.Has had the shop 25 years.Had a speed shop before that.

High integrity.He is religious person.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sorry for his family issues, but not one thing on that page says he works on Corvairs, I will use my local Corvair savvy shop that knows Corvair machine work.

Dave

'not one thing on that page says he works on Corvairs'

Maybe you need to spend a little more time away from the computer.

My block for another kind of engine is over at the local machine shop.

It was cleaned and blasted. Now it looks like a NOS block.Sort of.Little wear in

it here and there.

According to your thinking.

You wanted me to check ON THE INTERNET to see if they did that first?!

Brace yourself.I TALKED TO THEM on the phone to check price.Yes they could wash

our block and blast it.

So.I emailed Paul.Just to be sure!

Will probably get an answer sometime tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yep.Paul know Corvairs.

Here are some prices.

Bore hand hone cylinders 65.00 each

Wash and polish crank is 45.00

Check con rods 10.00 each

Swapping pistons on rods 10.00 each

Valve job 275.00 for the pair

Other work is quoted.

This guy does first class work.

When a fellow hot rodder has a setback that is the time to make a difference

and help out.

WOW $275 Valve job for both heads!!! That's about a $1100 + savings over everyone else on the planet! That price right there makes my point! A proper Corvair valve job requires deep seats installed, just doing that alone cost more than $275, so kinda proves my point this guy is not Corvair savvy, I applaud your kindness and generosity of trying to help a fellow car guy with his family problems, but once again you are talking about things you have absolutely no clue about at all, If you really want to help this guy, Join a V-8 car page and try to get him some work, that is what he advertises as being a expert in, V-8's, not Corvairs.

'kinda proves my point this guy is not Corvair savvy'

He is too!

Savvy means 'knows how to work on them'.

Not 'Specialist'.

He can do the everyday machine shop operations on a Corvair motor.

The kind of work you're talking about is cuckoo if the engine DOES NOT NEED IT.

You have really talked yourself into that your the last word on ALL THINGS

CORVAIR.

You are talking about 'botique' machine shops and restorers.

Shops with a name in the Corvair community.

Nobody claimed Paul Williams was that.

He is a person going through a trying time.

It would be the right thing to do to give him work on Corvairs that is within

his realm.

Not a red hot time to be nitpicky and small about it.

I'm with Dave on this one...just because one has a machine shop and WILL do work on Corvair parts, doesnt qualify him in my book. Its nice that you want to help drum him up work, but I dont like gambling with my money when it comes to internal work and heavy lifting on my engine. But hey...thats just like, my opinion, man

There is not one Corvair engine builder I know that will build a new Corvair engine without deep seat heads, it is a “must do” item on any Corvair rebuild, If you run standard valve seats heads on a new rebuilt Corvair engine you have just created A time bomb waiting to go off, there is no way any builder will warrantee a new rebuilt Corvair engine with stock valve seats.
What is Cuckoo is you pretending to know what you are talking about and trying to correct others on this forum who have been building Corvairs their entire life.

Your asking us to help someone guy who we don't know, great. When we suggested you spend $20 bucks for a really great Carb book, (the author, who by the way has past and his family gets the proceeds) you totally blew it off. Bob was not only a great member of this group, and a friend, but a very knowledgeable member of the entire Corvair community who has published lots of informative books. I am normally not a flamer, I just treat your posts the same as SPAM, it just happens I read this one.

Excuse me if I don't spend my time in endless arguments.

Here is the scoop.

The guy's name is Paul Williams. Here is the machine shop website.

[pwspecialties.com]

He will discuss what you would like done.

He will say yeah or nay whether he can do it.

He is a good guy.One of the best.

He is going through trying times.

The thing to do is support him by sending him some work.

That's that!

Happy Holidays!

X3 with J.O.

Tom K. is the head man for Bill Thomas tribute heads and general head rebuilds.
Ken Hand is another on of the trusted head men.

Won't send any of my heads to anyone else. I will build my own engines and let Clark's due the rods and pistons. Except when I need new pistons put on rods have and will reuse. Then I have a local machine that did Corvair engines back in 70s and 80s. They get the job to measure, NDT and install. Owner has had shop since hi dad turned it over to him and senior machinist has been that 40 years.

Being a religious person has zip to do with possessing many years of skills & knowledge of proper repair practices on a Corvair engine.

I use Steve Goodman for all my Corvair machine work. Of course he only has 60 years experience working on Corvairs.

Californian. Give that local shop a try. He seems to have gained your confidence. But let us know how everything works out after putting some real miles on his work. That's where one can make better recommendations to share. Especially with a forum with many years of experience with dedicated Corvair machine shops.
It's a real bear when one makes a recommendation and the shop or vender does not work out for others. $$$$ Believe me it has happened right here before.
I appreciate you sharing your findings. You seem to have a lot of enthusiasm.

And by the way... Corvair engines have Crankcases not Blocks. An engine block correctly has cylinders cast into it. However a Corvair engine can be a long block when cylinders and heads are installed.

Californian,

Have your machine shop guy help you build the 12-cylinder Corvair engine you proposed over on CF. That would be cool to see and give you both some cred.
