225/55R15 tires on Late
Posted by: andyman260 ()

Anyone running 225/55R15 tires on their late model? Can’t get 205/55R15 anymore but jumping to 225 gets me more options. I have 15x7 rims built in proper offset by American Racing.

225 is only one inch wider and it’s the same diameter as 205 but I’m concerned about clearances up front. No desire to go to bigger diameter rims.

Thanks!

225/55R15's are over 5% too tall. 205/55R15 are 3+% too short. How about 205/60R15 dead on the correct overall diameter and many options available?

225/50/15 is the same diameter as a 205/55/15 and there should be more tires available. The 225/55 should work but like Ted mentioned they're a bit taller than stock.

225/50 is also quite wide. If you try these you better fit them or measure they may not fit. Wheel choice makes a big difference in fit also. I used 215/50R15s on the rear of a mid engine car I had with later Camaro/S10 alloys. 215's were tight in the rear and would rub in the front. I put 205/50's in the front to avoid rubbing.

I ran 225/50R15 tires on 8” wide wheels. I had them rub once but for the most part they weren’t bad except for slow speeds in parking lots.

He was asking about 225s so I was giving him the size that matches his current 205 diameter and should still be available in many tires.

I have 225/50/16 on the rear no problem, some have gone up to 245 but you really have to pay attention to offset/backspacing in that case. You get close to the fender AND and toe rod.

I bet I could fit the 225/50/26 on my front wheel as well, but have 205/55/16 on them now. Fronts are +16 offset (5.125 backspacing) 8" wide, rears are 0 offset (4.5BS) 8" wide.

I have 1967 15" Corvette Rallye Wheels on my Vert.
I am told that they are wrong offset, by .5 inches.
I used to run, 205/55/15 front, and 225/50/15 on the rear.
No rubbing with that combo.
When I replaced my tires, there was a miscommunication between the sales guy I talked to and the tech who mounted my tires.
I had wanted to go away from the staggered sizes, but that was not what happened.
After I got home, I was looking at the car and realized that it was still staggered.
I just let it be and have lived with it.
Currently running, 205/60/15 on the front, and 225/60/15 on the rear.
225 is just too wide for the front, with my offset, but fits fine on the rear.
