In the absence of the adapters, how do I remove the cover. I have a slide hammer but no adapters.

You can just do one hole at a time going around the cover and it should get lose and pop off, there is a rubber seal all around the edge that might be stuck after 50 years, you might try and spray a little lube in there and let it soak in, but most times they come right off.

If you have a welder you can make an adapter real easy. Get a nut that fits your slide hammer and weld on the correct size bolt to fit the front cover.

OK I must be mechanically challenged.

The bolts go thru the cover and thread into something behind it.

If I am pulling on the cover, there is nothing for the nut to grip to.

Does that make sense.?

The outer (perimeter) bolts hold the rear cover to the Trans case, the inner bolt circle hold the pump to the cover, you remove all the bolts, and then screw the slide hammer into the inner bolt circle holes, it threads into the inner pump plate and pulls the entire unit out until the front pump cover pops off, like in this pic. all this info is in the shop manual.

thanks Dave, I will try that. I am going into new territory here, so I am little cautious

I know my way around a motor, but trans I tend to stay away from. Fear is a powerful adversary.
