360 Horse Power Corvair Flat 12 Coupled

This is the tentative solution to putting some punch in Corvairdom racing.

BECAUSE

1 If you put a V8 WITH a Corvair differential/axle and LOSE the Corvair body by

going the tube chassis route you CANNOT run at the Corsa slaloms for cheap.

2 Two Corvair engines COUPLED one in front of the other in a tube chassis mid

engine.I have seen ONE privateer airplane engine 12 cylinder block.Too expensive!

So.COUPLE them together.

3 Chassis is econo stock car type.4 tube stock car chassis with stock Corvair suspenion.

4 Body.Hang some sheet metal on the sides.Probably some fiberglass nose around that can be adapted and riveted on.

5 Can do same layout with just one Corvair 6 IF YOU WISH.

That is our best shot so far.

What's everybody think?

Now you are THINKING... nothing was said about using multiple '61-3 Corvair engines!

Thanks Matt

Corvair Budget GTP car?

Center steer or left steer?

If you lose the weight of the Corvair body the car will go faster.

The 'it will handle better' is not my department.

If you use stock Corvair suspension components that would be up to the builder to

put little tweeks in there to improve handling.

Here is picture of Corvette GTP car from the 80's.

Got it sorted out.

Corvair Budget Slalom Car.Might call it 'Formula Ugly'.

Here are some quick sketches.

Use stock suspension components.

That is my solution to getting up a little speed on those slalom courses.

Here is the side view.

Yes it does look like a big tin box.

Paint it white and start putting some free stickers on it!

If your crude sketch from the top view is the 'coupled' engine, you need to lengthen that wheelbase a bit, or put the driver's seat between the front tires - the motor(s) will be about 4' long.

Thanks Eric

'If your crude sketch from the top view is the 'coupled' engine'

You caught me! It is the Corvair 6.

This is what will get the Corvair around the slalom course quicker:

1 Lighter car

2 More power.

3 Better handling.

Building a chassis/body like this will shed some pounds.

Corvair 12 conversion will double your horsepower and add 150-200 lb's.

You can improve handling by subsituting link suspension.

Car with stock suspension would handle better in lighter car by itself.

I know that we are just "Bench Racing" here, and I do enjoy hypothetical designing, BUUUUUT . . . . .
There is some screwy math going on here.
you are installing a second engine, and plan to only "add 150-200 lb's." ? ? ?
I have been told that a Corvair engine weighs approx. 325 lb.
Now I have never been told if that is just the bare engine or a fully dressed one, but I doubt that even if it is a fully dressed engine, you are NOT going to reduce its weight by 125-175 lb. just by getting rid of extraneous items like a second alternator, and a second fuel pump.
What am I overlooking?
What else are you planning on getting rid of?
OH!
Also . . .
If you are doubling your HP, and you are quoting 360 as final, then you are obviously talking a pair of LM 180 turbo engines.
I thought your special race series was limited to '61 -'63 Corvairs?
Shouldn't your maxed HP be an even 300?
Personally, I kind of liked the idea of a twin engined, AWD racer, but that would be rather difficult with the limitations you and Matt have placed on this "California Hypothetical Racing Series".

'What else are you planning on getting rid of?'

Flywheel,pressure plate and clutch disk.

Starter.

'I thought your special race series was limited to '61 -'63 Corvairs?'

Yes.It is.

'Shouldn't your maxed HP be an even 300?'

360 sounds a whole lot better.Yes.It should be 300 horsepower.

'Personally, I kind of liked the idea of a twin engined, AWD racer'

Thanks! That is twin transaxle.

One drive train up front with front drive to the steering wheels.

Another one in back converted to mid engine.

Engines built the same.Same gear ratio differentials.

'that would be rather difficult with the limitations you and Matt have placed on this "California Hypothetical Racing Series".'

All wheel drive car is for running in Corsa Specialized.

'Howard of howard’s cams put two Corvair drive trains in a RV in the 60’s'

I am not up to speed on Howard's Cams.

Crane I knew was in Chula Vista on Main street.

Stopped in there once out of habit.

I was not firing on all eight and did not really make the best of the opportunity.

'Sorry , I saw it but can’t find the pictures'

No problem.I get the picture.

Briefly.I think a lot of hot rodder's look at the Corvair drive train and say

to themselves 'There is something there.'

I am thrashing around and agonizing over what to do with it.

There has got to be something real spiffy but it is just not coming to me.
